The early years of the program were marked by success, with the team winning numerous conference championships However, it wasn’t until the late 1960s and early 1970s that Hofstra truly began to establish itself as a Basketball powerhouse

Led by Head Coach Butch van Breda Kolff, the team enjoyed a period of unparalleled success, winning four consecutive conference championships from 1970 to 1974. This era also saw the emergence of future NBA Star Julius Erving who led the team to two NCAA tournament appearances.

After van Breda Kolff’s departure in 1976, Hofstra experienced a period of decline, failing to make the NCAA Tournament for nearly two decades. However, under the leadership of head coach Jay Wright the program experienced a resurgence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Wright led Hofstra to five NCAA Tournament appearances in a six-year span, cementing the team’s reputation as one of the nation’s elite programs.

In only its sixth season in the NCAA, Hofstra won its first and only National Championship in 1971. After going undefeated in the regular season and winning the conference tournament Hofstra found itself in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. The team won its first game against Temple before losing to eventual champions UCLA in the second round.

Hofstra then went on to win the National Invitation Tournament defeating St. John’s in the final. The victory made Hofstra the first New York team to ever win a basketball National Championship

The Road to the Championship

This season, the Hofstra Men’s basketball team is on a mission to win the NCAA Division I National Championship The team is currently ranked #1 in the country and has a record of 28-1.

Under the guidance of head coach Joe Mihalich, the team has won 3 consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championships and has made 3 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament In 2018, the team made it to the Round of 32 for the first time in school history. This year, they are determined to go even further.

Led by CAA Player of the Year Justin Wright-Foreman, who is averaging 26 points per game the team has been dominant all season long They have won 18 games in a row and are currently on a schedule where they will play 4 games in 4 days in order to win the CAA tournament and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament

The Final Championship

In the 2017-2018 season the Hofstra basketball team had their best season in school history. They finished with a record of 29-8, and won the CAA championship. This was their second championship in three years. The team was led by seniors Justin Wright-Foreman and Eli Pemberton, who were both named to the All-CAA first team.

The Final Championship was held at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Hofstra’s campus. Hofstra’s opponent was Northeastern, who they had beaten in the CAA Championship game two years prior. Northeastern was a tough opponent, but Hofstra was able to pull out a 79-74 victory. Wright-Foreman led the way for Hofstra with 24 points, and Pemberton added 19. With this win, Hofstra became the first team in CAA history to win back-to-back championships.
