NHL teams and players’ salaries
NHL teams and players’ salaries have been a topic of discussion for many years. Some fans believe that the salaries are too high and that the players are overpaid. Other fans believe that the salaries are fair and that the players deserve every penny.
Whatever your opinion on the matter, there is no denying that NHL salaries are high. The average salary for an NHL player is $2.7 million dollars per year. This number is up from $2.4 million dollars in 2017-18, and $2 million dollars in 2016-17. The salary cap for NHL teams is $79.5 million dollars for the 18-19 season This means that each team can spend up to $79.5 million dollars on player salaries

NHL expansion and contraction
With the way the NHL is currently set up, there are 30 teams in the league – 7 in Canada and 23 in the United States Unlike other major North American sports leagues, the NHL has not expanded since the 1990s, and in fact, has contracted twice.
The first contraction took place in 1998 when the NHL deserted both Arizona and Florida – two states which had been given teams only four years earlier as part of a massive expansion effort to grow the game’s popularity. The majority of American hockey fans were disappointed to see their teams disappear, but many Canadian fans were happy to see two less American teams in the league.
The second contraction took place in 2011 when the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers departed for Winnipeg, a move which made Manitoba once again a province with an NHL team The Thrashers had been a beloved team in Atlanta, but poor attendance and financial woes made it impossible for them to stay afloat. Their departure was a bittersweet moment for many hockey fans in Atlanta who had enjoyed watching their team play, but were excited for Winnipeg to once again have an NHL team
