The Immaculata Basketball Program A History of Championships

The Immaculata Basketball Program has a long and storied history of winning championships. Founded in 1972, the program has won an astounding eight National Championships, twenty-six conference championships and has had fifty-seven All-Americans. The program has also produced two Olympic gold medalists and three Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers.

Under the guidance of head coach Cathy Rush from 1972 to 1977, the Immaculata Basketball team compiled a 149-15 overall record and won three straight National Championships. In 1974, the team went undefeated with a 32-0 record, becoming the first team in women’s college basketball history to do so. The 1974 team was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

Cathy Rush was succeeded by her Assistant Coach Mike Daly, who led the team to a fourth consecutive National Championship in 1978. The following year, Daly guided the team to a fifth National Championship making Immaculata the first school in women’s College Basketball history to win five national titles.

From 1980 to 1985, under the leadership of Head Coach Theresa Grentz, the Immaculata basketball team won six conference championships and made seven consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament In 1982, Grentz guided the team to its sixth National Championship

In 1985, Grentz left Immaculata to take over as Head coach of Rutgers University’s women’s Basketball team She was succeeded by her assistant coach Lana Redwine-Bryant who, in her first year as head coach led Immaculata to its seventh National Championship Redwine-Bryant would go on to win two more conference championships and make four more NCAA tournament appearances before she was replaced by Tonya Cardoza in 1997.

In 2000, Cardoza became just the second head coach in Immaculata history to win a National Championship when she led her team to an upset victory over top-ranked Stanford University in the title game. Cardoza would go on to win two more conference championships before she was hired away by Temple University in 2006.

Wimpy Sutton took over as head coach of Immaculata’s Basketball Program in 2006 and guided the team to three more conference championships and four NCAA tournament appearances before he retired in 2012. His replacement was his former assistant coach Tracy Claxton who has continuedImmaculata’s tradition of success by winning two more conference championships and making three more NCAA tournament appearances.
