Iowa State Basketball began in 1908 with the formation of a team by George Veenker, the school’s first physical education instructor. The first game was played that year against a High School team from Ames, with Iowa State losing 24–10. In 1909, Veenker moved to Des Moines and took over the coaching position at Drake University, where he built a successful program.

There are a few schools that have developed a rivalry with the Iowa State Cyclones Basketball team The most notable is the in-state rivalry with the Iowa Hawkeyes The Hawkeyes and Cyclones first played each other in 1911 and have played each other every year since 1974. The series is currently led by Iowa, 85-68.

Another big rival for the Cyclones is the Kansas Jayhawks The Jayhawks and Cyclones have been playing each other since 1907 and currently, Kansas leads the series 133-59. These two teams meet at least twice a year, once in Ames and once in Lawrence.

Fred Enke is the program’s all-time leader in games coached and wins, having led the Cyclones for 17 seasons from 1960 to 1977. Johnny Orr is second in both categories, coaching Iowa State for 11 seasons from 1980 to 1981. Orr is also the only Iowa State coach to have led the program to a conference championship (Big Eight Conference in 1971), and he led the Cyclones to their first and only NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament appearance in 1980.

Larry Eustachy, who coached the Cyclones from 1998 to 2003, is the only Iowa State coach to have been named National Coach of the Year by multiple outlets, having been so honored by The Sporting News and ESPN in 2000. Tim Floyd, who coached Iowa State from 1998 to 2006) is the only other Cyclone basketball coach to have won a conference coach of the Year Award having been named Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year in 2001.
