Jimmy was a four-year starter for the Ohio State men’s basketball team During his career, the Buckeyes won four Big Ten championships and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Jimmy was named first-team All-Big Ten twice and was a two-time Academic All-American.
Early Life and High School
Jimmy was born in Akron, Ohio, to James and Michele Butler. He has two brothers, Jimmy and Jon. Jimmy’s father played basketball at the University of Akron and his grandfather played football at Kent State University Jimmy began playing basketball when he was five years old. He attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, where he was a three-time state champion in basketball and was named Mr. Basketball of Ohio in 2011. After high school Jimmy played college basketball at the University of Dayton for one year before transferring to Ohio State University
Recruiting
Jimmy was recruited by Tom Izzo of Michigan State but he eventually chose to play for Ohio State under Head Coach Jim O’Brien.
Freshman Season
Jimmy Laing was a freshman on the Ohio State men’s Basketball team during the 18-19 season He played in 35 games, averaging 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.8 minutes per game. He had a season-high six points against Iowa on February 16, 2019.
Sophomore Season
During his sophomore season, Jimmy averaged career-lows in points (9.3), rebounds (4.6), and assists (2.4) per game. He also shot a career-low 41.1 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from three-point range Despite these numbers, Jimmy was still able to lead the team in scoring and was second on the team in assists. He was also named a Second Team All-Big Ten selection by the conference’s coaches.
Junior Season
Jimmy was a key player during his junior season, averaging 9.5 points and 5.0 assists per game He was named First Team All-Big Ten and helped lead the Buckeyes to a share of the Big Ten regular season title. Jimmy’s biggest moments came in the NCAA Tournament where he hit a clutch three-pointer to help Ohio State upset Kentucky in the Round of 32, and then scored 19 points in a Sweet Sixteen loss to Marquette.
Senior Season
Jimmy’s senior season was his best one yet. He averaged 15 points per game and was a key player in the team’s success.
Post-College Career
Jimmy took his skills to the professional level, playing for the Boston Celtics from 1989 to 1990. He then spent two seasons with the Miami Heat before being traded back to the Celtics in 1992. He would go on to play for the Celtics until 1995, when he was traded to the Detroit Pistons He would finish his career where it started, retiring as a member of the Celtics in 1998.
Legacy
Jimmy was a member of the Ohio State men’s basketball team from 2011 to 2015. He helped the team win the 2012 Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Championship and was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team in 2012. He also won the 2013 Big Ten conference Men’s Basketball Tournament with the team.
Personal Life
Jimmy Butler was born in Houston, Texas, on September 14, 1989. He was raised by his mother, Loyce Butler. Jimmy has two older sisters, Michelle Butler and Jessica Butler. He also has a younger brother, Jackie Butler. Jimmy’s father was not present in his life growing up.
Jimmy began playing basketball when he was in fifth grade. He continued to play throughout high school and eventually earned a scholarship to play at Ohio State University Jimmy played for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2008 to 2011. During his time at Ohio State Jimmy helped the team win the Big Ten conference tournament championship in 2010. He also played in the NCAA tournament three times.
Jimmy graduated from Ohio State with a degree in sports management After graduation, he signed with an agent and began pursuing a Professional Basketball career.

Jimmy played shooting guard for the Ohio State men’s Basketball team from 2006 to 2010. During his time with the Buckeyes, Jimmy was a key member of the team that won the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship After his college career, Jimmy went on to play professionally in Europe for several years before returning to the United States to join the Coaching Staff of his alma mater.
