John Grant was born in Oakland, California, on July 6, 1966. He grew up in the Bay Area and played baseball at Berkeley High School He then went on to play college baseball at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). After college, he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 1988 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. He played Minor League Baseball (MiLB) for two years before making his MLB debut with the Giants in 1990. He played for the Giants for four years before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1994. He played for the Cubs for one year before being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 1995. He played for the Orioles for three years before being traded back to the Giants in 1998. He played his final MLB season with the Giants in 1999.
Grant was a very successful baseball player during his career. In 1994, he was named National League (NL) Rookie of the Year. In 1996, he was named NL Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was also a six-time All-Star and won two World Series titles with the Giants (in 1997 and 1999).
