Catcher- Michael Lancaster

Lancaster is a senior from Louisville, Kentucky. He is a four-year starter for the Wildcats and has been one of the team’s most consistent performers. He is a .276 career hitter with 15 home runs and 108 RBI. Lancaster is also a very Good defensive catcher and has thrown out 33 percent of would-be base stealers during his career.

First baseman- Matt Reynolds

Reynolds is a junior from Lexington, Kentucky. He took over as the team’s starting first baseman midway through his freshman season and has been one of the Wildcats’ best hitters over the past two years. Reynolds is a .288 career hitter with 17 homers and 86 RBI. He has also shown good plate discipline, walking almost as much as he strikes out.

Second baseman- Riley Mahan

Mahan is a sophomore from Somerset, Kentucky. He was Kentucky’s starting second baseman as a freshman and had an outstanding season, hitting .305 with six homers and 40 RBI. Mahan also showed good speed on the bases, stealing 12 bases in 14 attempts. He should be one of the Wildcats’ top offensive performers again this season.

Third baseman- Colby Bortles

Bortles is a junior from Owensboro, Kentucky. He took over as Kentucky’s starting third baseman last season and had an excellent year, hitting .302 with 10 homers and 53 RBI. Bortles also did a nice job defensively, committing just seven errors in 55 games at third base. He should be one of the Wildcats’ top run producers again this season.

The Pitching Staff

The Pitching Staff is the backbone of any baseball team The staff of the Kentucky Baseball Team is no different. Comprised of some of the best pitchers in the country, the staff is led by ace pitcher, Logan Wrobleski. Wrobleski, a senior from Louisville, KY, has been with the team all four years of his collegiate career. He has been named to multiple all-conference and all-region teams. Wrobleski is joined by fellow senior pitcher, Tanner Holton. Holton, from Lexington, KY, is a hard-throwing right-hander that has been a mainstay in the rotation for the past three seasons. The two seniors are joined by a talented group of young pitchers that includes sophomore sensation Jake Johnson and freshman phenom Ryan Shinn. Johnson, from Bowling Green KY, burst onto the scene last year as a freshman and immediately established himself as one of the best pitchers in the conference. Shinn, from Hazard, KY, was named Mr. baseball in Kentucky after an outstanding High School career in which he struck out over 200 batters. The pitching staff is rounded out by junior transfer Alex Maier and sophomore left-hander Austin Cousins. Maier comes to Kentucky from Northern Kentucky University where he was a member of the pitching staff for two years. Cousins comes to Kentucky after an outstanding freshman season at Marshall University in which he posted a 4-1 record with a 3.86 ERA.

The Infield

The infield of a baseball team is composed of four positions: first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman. These positions are occupied by the four players who play closest to the four bases on the diamond. The first baseman’s job is to catch balls hit to the right side of the infield; the second baseman’s job is to catch balls hit to the left side of the infield; the shortstop’s job is to catch balls hit between first and second base or between second and third base; and the third baseman’s job is to catch balls hit to the left of second base or to the right of first base.

The Kentucky Baseball Roster features some of the best infielders in the country. First baseman Chandler Shepherd is a two-time All-American who led the team in home runs and RBIs last season. Second baseman JaVon Shelby is a dynamic player who can hit for average and power and is also a superb defender. Shortstop Connor Heady is a slick-fielding shortstop with a strong arm who hits for average and stolen bases Third baseman Zack Burdi is a power-hitting third baseman with a strong arm who was named All-SEC last season.

Right fielder, Bryce Harper is another top-notch player from the Bluegrass State. Harper was the number one overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals He is a six-time All-Star and was named the National League MVP in 2015.

Finally, we have Left fielder Mike Trout Trout is widely considered to be one of the best players in all of baseball. He has been named an All-Star eight times and has won three American League MVP Awards He has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels and is currently signed to the largest contract in MLB history.

The Catchers

The Catchers are the backbone of any good baseball team They have to be able to field their position well and throw out runners who are trying to steal bases. They also need to have a good bat, as they are often called upon to drive in runs. Here are the best catchers in Kentucky history.

1. John McDonald- McDonald was a mainstay on the Kentucky roster for 12 years. He was a excellent defensive catcher and was known for his strong arm. He also hit for a high average and was a clutch hitter, driving in many important runs during his career.

2. Mike Piazza Piazza is arguably the best hitting catcher of all time, and he played his early years with the Kentucky Wildcats He had a sweet swing that produced a lot of home runs and doubles, and he was also a very good defensive catcher. Piazza is one of the most popular Kentucky players of all time.

3. Jason Varitek- Varitek was another excellent defensive catcher who also had a very good bat. He played on some very good Kentucky teams during his career, and he was always one of the leaders on those teams. Varitek was known for his intensity and competitiveness, and he helped the Wildcats win many games during his career.

###Pitchers
Kentucky has a deep pitching staff led by ace starter Sean Hjelle. The junior right-hander has been dominant on the mound, posting a 6-1 record with a 2.48 ERA in 11 starts. He has struck out 72 batters in 73 innings and has only walked 19. Hjelle will be key to the Wildcats’ success down the stretch as they compete for an SEC title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament

The rest of Kentucky’s pitching staff has been strong as well, with junior Zack Thompson leading the way in relief appearances. He has appeared in 22 games, pitching 33 innings with a 3-1 record and four saves.

Other key pitchers for Kentucky include sophomore left-hander Bradley Koontz, who has appeared in 18 games with one start, and senior right-hander Chris Machamer, who has made 10 starts and one relief appearance.

###Infielders
The Wildcats have been solid defensively up the middle with juniors Troy Squires and Luke Becker handling most of the work at shortstop and second base, respectively. Both players have good range and have been sure-handed in the field.

At third base, senior Riley Mahan has beenKentucky’s best hitter this season, batting .333 with nine Home Runs and 34 RBIs in 50 games played Mahan is also one of the team’s best defenders at the hot corner thanks to his strong arm.

In left field junior Zach Reks has been steady offensively, batting .286 with two home runs and 23 RBIs while also providing good defense in his first season as starter. In center field, sophomore Tristan Pompey continues to be one of Kentucky’s best all-around players. He is batting .288 with four homers and 28 RBIs while also playing excellent defense in center field. Rounding out Kentucky’s outfield is freshman Ryan Shinn in right field. Shinn brings speed to the Wildcats’ lineup and is currently batting .273 with three home runs and 20 RBIs while manning right field admirably as a freshman.. Behind the plate, junior Michael Hickshas done a good job handling Kentucky’s pitching staff while also adding some pop to the lineup offensively, batting .276 with six home runs and 30 RBIs in 50 games played
