Reasons for Incoming Transfers

Incoming transfers have a few different motivations for why they might choose to come to play for the Lobos. Some are looking for a change of scenery, some are homesick, and some just want to be closer to family. Others are looking for a chance to play more competitive basketball and see UNM as an opportunity to do that. Still, others come to UNM because they have friends or family members who live in Albuquerque.

Reasons for Outgoing Transfers

NCAA Transfer rules require that a student-athlete spend one academic year in residence at the school to which they are transferring before they are eligible to compete. The rule applies to all Division I schools, including the University of New Mexico.

In order for a school to provide a scholarship to a transfer student, that school must have available scholarships that equal or exceed the number of scholarships currently being provided to students at that same school. In other words, if UNM has 15 basketball scholarships currently being used and a transfer student comes in who wants a Basketball Scholarship UNM must have 16 total scholarships available in order for the transfer student to be eligible for aid.

If a player is not on scholarship or if their scholarship is not being renewed for the upcoming season they are free to transfer without having to sit out a season.

How Incoming Transfers Fit In

The Lobo Basketball team has seen a lot of changes this offseason, with several players transferring out and several new players transferring in. So how will the new transfers fit into the team?

Incoming transfers
The Lobos have added four new players via transfer:
-Giovanni De Nicolao, a 6’3″ guard from Italy who played last season at UC Santa Barbara He’s a good shooter and should provide some scoring punch off the bench.
-David Tolliver, a 6’7″ forward from Texas Tech He’s a versatile player who can play both inside and out, and he’ll add some good size to the Lobos frontcourt.
-Jordan Thomas, a 6’5″ guard from Oklahoma State He’s a good all-around player who can score, rebound, and defend, and he’ll add some valuable experience to the Lobos backcourt.
-JaQuan Marriage, a 6’6″ forward from Seton Hall He’s a talented scorer who can also rebound and defend, and he should be able to contribute right away for the Lobos.

Outgoing transfers
The Lobos have also seen four players transfer out:
-Troy Simons, a 6’4″ guard who was the Lobos leading scorer last season but struggled with inconsistency. He’s transferring to Arizona State
-Chris McNeal, a 6’7″ forward who was hampered by injuries last season but is still a talented player. He’s transferring to Texas A&M.
-Darius Thompson, a 6’5″ guard who didn’t see much playing time last season but has potential. He’s transferring to Wichita State
-Matt Willms, a 7’1″ center who was buried on the depth chart but is still a big body with some skill. He’s transferring to UTEP.

How Outgoing Transfers Fit Out

The Lobo basketball team has seen a lot of changes in the past few weeks, with several players transferring out of the program. Here’s a look at how those outgoing transfers fit into their new programs.

Guard Alyssa Julson decided to leave the Lobos after two seasons and will be transferring to Texas Tech Julson was a key player for the Lobos, averaging 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game last season.

Forward/center Alex Sheedy is also transferring out of the program and will be headed to Maryland. Sheedy was a key player for the Lobos last season, averaging 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game

Guard/forward KhrystalForbing is transferring to Louisiana State University Forbing only played in eight games for the Lobos last season, but she averaged 4.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game

Guard/forward Kiara Ursin is transferring to Central Connecticut State University Ursin played in all 33 games for the Lobos last season, averaging 2.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.

Roster Impact of Transfers

The Lobo Basketball team will have a different look next season, as five players have transferred since the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

Head coach Paul Weir has brought in two new transfers to help offset the departures.

Here’s a look at who’s in and who’s out for New Mexico:

In:
-Darius Henderson (G, 6-4, 185, Chicago, Illinois): Transferred from Southeast Missouri State Will have two years of eligibility remaining.
-Aaron Valdes (G, 6-5, 210, Hurst, Texas): Transferred from UC Irvine. Will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Out:
-Sam Logwood (F, 6-6, 220, Birmingham, Alabama): Transferred to Alabama.
-Jordan Hunter (F/C, 6-11, 235, Los Angeles): Transferred to UTEP.
– Vanguardia (G/F, 6-7 215 El Paso): Transferred to Grambling State
Isaiah Mauricio (C 7 feet El Paso Rams only played one game for UNM) is not on the roster anymore either and it’s unclear where he will play next season

Coaching Impact of Transfers

As the offseason continues, Lobos Basketball is dealing with the coaching impact of transfers. Head Coach Paul Weir, will have to replace four Key Players from last year’s rotation including two who left the program late in the season.

First, guard Jaden Schieberl decided to transfer to Missouri State Afterwards, small forward Corey Manigault also decided to leave New Mexico and transfer to Virginia Tech Late in the process, big man Donnell Gross also announced he would be transferring out of UNM. Lastly, shooting guard Joseph Duarte will not return for his senior season and will instead pursue a professional career.

Recruiting Impact of Transfers

The Lobo basketball team has seen a lot of changes in recent years with several players transferring in and out of the program. This has had a significant impact on the team’s recruiting efforts, as well as its overall competitiveness.

In the past few years, the Lobos have lost some key players to transfer, including guard Anthony Mathis (now at Oregon) and forward Carlton Bragg (now at Kansas). While these departures have certainly hurt the team, they have also opened up opportunities for other players to step up and fill those voids.

The Lobos have also been able to add some talented transfer players to their roster, including guard Jabari Rice (formerly of Michigan State) and forward Vance Jackson (formerly of Connecticut). These additions have helped offset some of the losses from earlier transfers and have made the Lobos a more competitive team.

Looking ahead to the future, the Lobos will continue to be impacted by transfers, both in terms of who they lose and who they gain. However, with a solid core of returning players and some promising newcomers, the Lobos should be able to compete for a conference championship in the coming years.

Future Impact of Transfers

As the off-season continues, college basketball programs across the country are preparing for next season by adding and subtracting players through the transfer market. Here’s a look at some of the recent transfer activity for the Lobo Basketball Program and what it could mean for the team’s future:

In:

G Mikey Dixon (Juco transfer): A former four-star recruit, Dixon should provide an instant scoring boost for a Lobo team that finished near the bottom of the conference in offensive efficiency last season.

F Dragan Elkaz (Grad transfer): A 6’10” forward with three years of Division I experience, Elkaz should help solidify a thin frontcourt rotation.

Out:

G Braeden Anderson (Transferring): Anderson was a key reserve for the Lobos last season, but his loss shouldn’t have a major impact on the team as his playing time was expected to decrease with the addition of Dixon.

F Makuach Maluach (Transferring): Maluach saw limited action as a freshman last season, and his departure shouldn’t have a major impact on the team.
