The Louisville Colonels: A Brief History

The Louisville Colonels were a minor league baseball team that played in Louisville, Kentucky from 1882 until 1972. The Colonels were the first professional baseball team in Louisville and were one of the founding members of the American Association, which was formed in 1882.

The Colonels won the American Association pennant 5 times (1885, 1889, 1890, 1895, 1896) and the World Series once (1890). The team’s most famous player was Honus Wagner who is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

The Colonels began to decline in the early 1900s due to competition from other teams in the American Association and from the newly-formed Louisville Riverbats. The team ceased operations after the 1972 season.
