Marshall baseball’s schedule
The Marshall Baseball Team will be playing a lot of games in the upcoming season The schedule is packed with games, and the team will be busy traveling to different cities.
The packed schedule
The Marshall Baseball team’s schedule is packed with 42 games in 46 days. The team will play 28 games on the road and 14 at home. The majority of the games will be against conference opponents.
Why the packed schedule?
The majority of college teams play between 40 and 60 games in a season. This gives the athletes time to balance school with practice and travel for games. So why does Marshall play nearly 70 games?
The short answer is that Head Coach Jeff Waggoner wants his team to be battle-tested come conference tournament time.
“We want our guys to be playing their best baseball when it really matters – in May and hopefully into June,” Waggoner said. “To do that, you’ve got to schedule tough competition early in the season.”
How the packed schedule affects the team
The Marshall baseball team has a packed schedule this season, playing 56 games in just over three months. The intense schedule can take a toll on the players, both physically and mentally.
“It’s definitely a grind,” senior catcher Matt Dacey said. “You’ve got to be able to go out there every day and give it your all, both physically and mentally.”
Dacey said the key to surviving a packed schedule is to take it one day at a time and not get ahead of yourself. “You can’t look too far ahead, or else you’ll start to get overwhelmed,” he said. “You’ve just got to focus on the task at hand and try to enjoy the moment.”
The mental grind of the season can be just as tough as the physical one, Dacey said. “It’s easy to get bogged down with all the games and travel,” he said. “You’ve just got to find a way to stay positive and have fun with your teammates.”
The coaches also have to be mindful of how the schedule is affecting their players. “We really have to monitor their workload and make sure they’re getting enough rest,” head coach Dan Hackett said. “The last thing we want is for them to get burned out.”
Hackett said he also tries to mix up the team’s practice routine to keep things fresh. “We’ll switch things up from time to time, whether it’s working on different defensive drills or changing our offensive approach,” he said. “It’s important that the guys stay engaged mentally so they don’t get too antsy.”
Despite the challenges of a packed schedule, Hackett said he believes it will ultimately make his team better. “It’s definitely a tough way to do things, but I think it will pay off in the long run,” he said.
The fans
The first Home game is always a big deal for the team, but this year it’s an especially big deal because it’s the first time the team will be playing in front of their fans in their new stadium. The stadium is still under construction, but the team is hoping to have it ready by the end of the month.
The fans have been waiting a long time for this moment and they are expected to turn out in droves. The team is hoping to use the home-field advantage to their advantage and get off to a strong start.
The media
The Media Day for Marshall baseball was Tuesday, and already the team is getting a lot of attention. The Herd was picked to finish second in Conference USA in the preseason poll, and they have a preseason top-25 ranking for the first time in program history.
The future
The future of Marshall Baseball is looking extremely bright. With an abundance of young talent and an impressive Coaching Staff the Herd should be a force to reckon with in Conference USA for years to come.
This season, Marshall will face a tough non-Conference Schedule that includes games against nationally ranked opponents such as Louisville, Texas Tech and UCF. In conference play the Herd will battle it out with teams like Florida Atlantic Southern Miss and Old Dominion.
With a mix of veteran leadership and fresh young talent, Marshall has all the pieces in place to make a run at the Conference USA title this season. Be sure to catch the Herd in action this year!
