The Local Scene
In addition to the Major League teams that call the Twin Cities home, there are also a number of minor league and independent teams in the metro area. Whether you’re a casual fan or a die-hard baseball lover, there’s a team for you to root for.
The Minnesota Twins of course, are the flagship team in the state. They play their home games at Target Field located in downtown Minneapolis. The Twins are one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball having won two World Series titles and 10 American League pennants.
The St. Paul Saints are an independent minor league team that plays its home games at CHS Field in St. Paul’s Lowertown neighborhood. The Saints are known for their creative promotions and fun ballpark experience.
The Rochester Honkers are a Northwoods League team based in Rochester, Minnesota. The Honkers play their home games at Mayo Field, located just blocks from Mayo Clinic.
The Mankato MoonDogs are another Northwoods League team, based in Mankato, Minnesota. The MoonDogs play their home games at Franklin Rogers Park.
The Teams
In Major League Baseball there are 30 teams spread across the United States In order to be fair, each team plays 162 games in a season. Of those 162 games, 81 are played at home in their home ballpark and 81 are played away against the other 29 teams. The regular season typically starts in early April and ends in late September or early October.
The top team from each division (there are 6 divisions total) automatically makes the playoffs. Then, the next best 5 teams regardless of division make the playoffs as “wild card” teams. These 11 teams then compete in a 6-day playoff tournament to decide who will make it to the World Series The World Series is a best of 7 game series between the 2 remaining teams and is played in October.
