Here is a breakdown of who’s in and who’s out for the upcoming season

Gone are forwards J.T. Compher, Tyler Motte, and Kyle Connor, as well as defenseman Zach Werenski. These four players were key members of last year’s team and their loss will be felt. In their place, Michigan will welcome six new forwards: Cooper Marody, Josh Norris, Logan Brown, Robert Thomas, Oliver Wahlstrom, and Luke Kunin. On defense, the Wolverines will have two new faces: Wyatt Kalynuk and Jack St. Ivany.

Subtractions

The Michigan Hockey Team has announced its roster for the upcoming season and there are some significant changes from last year. First and foremost, goalie Jimmy Howard has been traded to the Nashville Predators leaving a big hole in net. Additionally, forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Andreas Athanasiou have both been traded to the Edmonton Oilers while defenseman Dylan Larkin has been traded to the Arizona Coyotes. These are all big losses for the team, and it will be interesting to see how they cope without them.

Defensemen

The Michigan Wolverines men’s Ice Hockey team is an NCAA Division I college Ice hockey team that represents the University of Michigan The Wolverines have competed in the Big Ten Conference since 2013, having been members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1981 to 2013. They are currently coached by Mel Pearson.

The team plays its home games at Yost Ice Arena, located on the university’s campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On November 30, 1901, Michigan played its first game against a High School team from Toronto. By 1927, Michigan had begun competing against other collegiate teams and was a founding member of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (MCHL). Four different league titles were captured by Michigan before the school ultimately left the league in 1957 to join the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

Since joining the CCHA in 1981, Michigan has won 13 regular season conference championships and 12 conference tournament championships. Additionally, 23 different Wolverines have been named as First Team All-Americans and 50 have received collegiate hockey’s highest individual honor: selection as a Hobey Baker Award finalist. Sixteen former players or coaches have been inducted into either the United States Hockey Hall of Fame or the Hockey Hall of Fame Glen Harmon, Red Berenson Hobey Baker, Chad Billingsley, Chris Chelios, John Chandler Jr., Neil Celley, Al Renfrew Sr., Vic Heyliger Sr., Jack Stewart Sr., Steve Thomas and Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill.

Goaltenders

The Michigan Hockey Team will have a new look in net this season as they replace their two primary goaltenders from last year. Goaltenders Jimmy Howard and Al Montoya both played significant roles for the team last season, but both have graduated and moved on to professional careers. This leaves a big question mark in net for the Wolverines.

The most likely candidate to take over the starting job is junior Charlie Davidson. Davidson saw limited action last season, appearing in just three games. He posted a 2-1-0 record with a .923 save percentage and a 2.33 goals against average. Davidson will be competing with senior Robbie Rezabek and freshman Billy Sauer for the starting job.

Rezabek has been the backup goaltender for the past two seasons and has appeared in eight career games, posting a 4-3-0 record with a .901 save percentage and a 3.13 goals against average. Sauer is a highly touted recruit who was recently named to the U.S. National Junior Team Development Camp roster. He is expected to push Davidson and Rezabek for playing time this season.

Outlook

This season, the Michigan Hockey Team will look to recover from a disappointing 2017-18 campaign in which they failed to make the NCAA tournament They will have a young roster, with only four seniors, but they do return a number of Key Players from last year’s team.

Forwards:

The forwards will be led by junior forward Hayden Nordstrom, who was second on the team in points last season with 29. Nordstrom will be joined by fellow junior forward Luke Morgan, who had 25 points last season. The two of them will be the go-to guys offensively for the Wolverines.

The rest of the forwards will be made up of sophomores and freshmen. Sophomores Cooper Marody and Tony Calderone both had solid freshman seasons and will look to build on that this year. Freshmen Jacob Hayhurst and Jesse Ylonen will also be looking to make an impact.

Defense:

The defense will be anchored by senior defenseman Joseph Cecconi, who was named a second-team All-American last season. Cecconi will be joined by junior defenseman Quinn Hughes, who is considered one of the best NHL prospects in college hockey The two of them will form a formidable top pairing for Michigan.

The rest of the defense corps will be young, with sophomore Griffin Luce and freshman Kale Bennett being the only other returnees from last season. Freshmen Carter Camper and Nick Boka will also be looking to make an impact on the defensive end.
