The Top Prospects’ Performance

The 2019 Midwest Futures baseball season is finally underway, and with it comes our annual look at the top prospects in the league. As always, there is a lot of talent to be found in the Midwest, and this year is no different. Here is a look at how some of the top prospects have fared so far this season.

Cody Bellinger, OF, Milwaukee Brewers
The top prospect in the league, Bellinger has not disappointed thus far. In 21 games, he is hitting .340/.429/.677 with 6 home runs and 18 RBI. He has already been promoted to Triple-A and appears to be on track for a Major League debut at some point this season.

Alex Reyes, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals
Reyes has been dominant in his first taste of Triple-A baseball. In four starts, he has pitched to a 1.96 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched He has already been added to the Cardinals’ 40-man roster and could see time in the majors this season if he continues to pitch well.

Dylan Cozens, OF, Philadelphia Phillies
Cozens has struggled mightily to begin his Triple-A career. In 20 games, he is hitting just .176/.273/.310 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. He does have good power potential, but needs to make more contact if he wants to realize it at the highest level

Gavin Cecchini, SS/2B, New York Mets
Cecchini has seen time at both shortstop and second base so far this season and has fared well at both positions defensively. Offensively, he is hitting .267/.333/.396 with 1 home run and 7 RBI in 19 games played He appears to be on track for a Major League debut sometime later this season.

The Top Prospects’ Path to the Majors

Many of the top prospects in baseball have a similar path to the Major Leagues They are drafted out of high school or college, play in the minors for a few years, and then are called up to the big leagues. However, there are always a few prospects who stand out from the rest.

In recent years players like Mike Trout Kris Bryant, and Bryce Harper have made an immediate impact in the majors. They were able to bypass the minors and go straight to the big leagues. These players are the exception rather than the rule. Most prospects will spend at least a few years in the minors before they are called up to the majors.

The vast majority of prospects will never make it to the Major Leagues Of the players who are drafted, only a small percentage will even make it to Triple-A. For example, of the players who were drafted in 2010, only about 10% have made it to Triple-A. The chances of making it to the Major Leagues are even smaller. For example, of the players who were drafted in 2010, only about 2% have made it to the major leagues

The path to the Major Leagues is not an easy one. Prospects face long odds and many will never make it to the big leagues. However, for those rare few who do make it, it can be a very rewarding experience.
