The 1960s were a decade of success for Millikin basketball. The team won five conference championships and made three appearances in the NCAA tournament They also produced two All-Americans: George Pimentel and Dick Kistle.

In 1970, Ford retired and was replaced by Charles “Buck” Readling. Readling led Millikin to two more conference championships and another NCAA appearance before he was forced to resign amid allegations of recruiting violations in 1976.

After a brief period without a head coach Millikin hired Gene Bess in 1977. Bess would go on to become one of the most successful coaches in school history. He led Millikin to eight conference championships and nine NCAA Tournament appearances over his tenure. His teams were known for their physical style of play, which earned them the nickname “Bess’ Brawlers.” He retired in 2000 with a career record of 624-261.

In 2001, Millikin hired Matt Thornton as its new Head Coach Thornton had served as an assistant under Bess for several years, and he was tasked with continuing Bess’ legacy of success. Thornton has done just that, leading Millikin to seven conference championships and eight NCAA tournament appearances over his tenure. He has also been named Conference Coach of the Year three times (2002, 2005, 2008).

Under Thornton’s leadership, Millikin’s Basketball Program has continued to thrive. The team is consistently ranked among the best in Division III and they have produced numerous All-Americans and Academic All-Americans over the years. With Thornton at the helm, Millikin is poised for continued success in the years to come.
