The team last played in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2018.
The Missouri Tigers Basketball Program was founded in 1908 by George Edwards and Robert Leybourne Farris. The first basketball game played by a Tiger team was on January 12, 1909, against Fulton College. The Tigers won the game 30–20.[1] The program was led by multiple coaches including Lester E. Buzz Taylor, Fred Thomsen, Craig Ruby, Harry Hardy, and Mark Francis; it enjoyed meager success under these coaches.[2] These coaches helped build what would become one of college basketball’s most storied rivalries: between Missouri and Kansas. By 1929, the program had begun to gel under Francis Schmidt; he coached for four seasons before being hired at Tulane.[3]
Under Schmidt, the Basketball Program experienced great success; he led them to an undefeated season in 1932–33 and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1934–35.[4] Schmidt left after the 1934–35 season to take over at Ohio State [5] where he would win an NCAA National Championship as head coach of their football team.[6][7]
Ed Diddle took over for Schmidt after his departure for Ohio State [8] but was unable to replicate Schmidt’s level of success. He did lead them to a number of winning seasons during his tenure;[9][10][11] however, many of those seasons were later vacated due to recruiting violations during that time period.[12][13][14][15] Diddle was also responsible for creating one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries: between Kentucky and Louisville.[16][17] In 1947, Diddle left Kentucky for Western Kentucky [18][19] where he won his only NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship as Head Coach in 1953.[20] He retired from coaching soon thereafter for health reasons.[21]
Dee Hockenbury succeeded Diddle starting with the 1954–55 season;[22], 27-28 however he only lasted three seasons before resigning due to issues with his blood pressure and heart condition.[23], 68 Even though Hockenbury only coached for three seasons, Missouri still credits him with those wins as part of its official record book Chuck Devine then took over starting with the 1957–58 season[24Header: 516 but he too only lasted three years before resigning due to disagreements with university administrators over player recruitment policies at a time when freshmen were not eligible to play varsity sports [25Header: 309-10 Dick Harp then took over as Head coach starting with the 1960–61 season[26Header:, but 26-27he resigned just four games into that season after falling ill from what doctors later determined was Undulant Fever brought on by exposure to infected farm animals while recruiting in rural Missouri.[27Header: 352-53Maurice John then became just the fourth head coach in school history when he was hired prior to the start of the 1963–64 season.,[28Header:, but 63-64he compiled a record of just 13 wins against 17 losses in his only season as head coach before resigning due to personal reasons prior to the start of the 1964–65 season.,[29 Header:/6540-41Norm Stewart then took over as head coach beginning with
