The regular season

The Major League Baseball regular season typically runs from late March/early April to late September/early October. Each team plays 162 games, which are typically played over a 183-day period.

The all-star break is typically held in mid-July, and the postseason ( playoffs) starts in October. The World Series the Championship Series of Major League Baseball is typically played in October as well.

The Postseason

The postseason consists of the three-tiered wild-card playoff system which expanded from two teams in 2012, followed by the best-of-seven American League and National League Division Series and finally the best-of-seven AL and NL Championship Series The winners of each League Championship Series then advance to play each other in the best-of-seven World Series

The World Series

The World Series is the annual championship series of major league baseball (MLB) in North America contested since 1903 between the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team. The winner of the World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff, and the winning team is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy. As the series is played during the fall season in North America it is sometimes referred to as the Fall Classic.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is an annual professional baseball game sanctioned by Major League Baseball (MLB). It is usually held mid-July and marks the symbolic halfway point of the MLB season Both the American League (AL) and National League (NL) teams are selected by a combination of fans, players, and baseball staff. From 1932 through 1946, MLB staged the Midsummer Classic at various ballparks around the country; since 1947, it has been held in the same venue every year: first at Chicago’s Comiskey Park from 1947 to 2002, then at Milwaukee’s Miller Park from 2003 to 2009, followed by Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California, in 2010; Chase Field in Phoenix in 2011; Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City in 2012; Citi Field in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City ,in 2013; Target Field in Minneapolis 2014; Great American Ball Park Cincinnati 2015; Petco Park San Diego 2016 San Diego ; Marlins Park Miami 2017 and Nationals Park Washington D.C. 2018.

Winter Meetings

The annual Winter Meetings are held each December for four days, bringing together all 30 major league baseball Clubs, their General Managers and other baseball executives. Representatives from Major League Baseball and the Major League baseball players Association also attend. The meetings have been held continuously since December 1920, when they were first held in Cincinnati. Typically, the Rule 5 Draft is held on the last day of the Winter Meetings.

The Hot Stove League

The Hot Stove League is the period of baseball offseason when managers and general managers plan for the upcoming season During this time, teams make trades and signings to improve their rosters for the upcoming season The league gets its name from the “stove” that was once used to heat up Baseball Diamonds during the winter.

This year’s Hot Stove League has been one of the most active in recent memory, with many blockbuster trades and free agent signings. Here’s a look at some of the most notable moves of the offseason:

The Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for outfielders Alex Verdugo and Joc Pederson, pitchers Kenta Maeda and Brusdar Graterol, and minor league infielder Connor Wong

The New York Yankees signed free agent outfielder Gerrit Cole to a nine-year, $324 million contract Cole is coming off a career year in which he went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA and led the league in strikeouts ( CY Young Award ).

The San Diego Padres made a series of trades that fortified their roster for a run at a postseason berth. They acquired pitchers Mike Clevinger, Joey Lucchesi, Blake Snell Tim Hill Dan Altavilla, Garrett Richards, Emilio Pagán, and Austin Adams; catcher Jason Castro; infielders Jurickson Profar and Trevor Rosenthal; and outfielders Tommy Pham Trent Grisham, Edward Olivares, Wil Myers , Franchy Cordero ,and Jorge Mateo .

Free agency

Free agency is a time when players who are not under contract with a team can sign with any team they choose. In baseball, free agency usually occurs after a player has completed six years of service time in the Major Leagues During free agency players can sign any contract they choose, as long as the team is willing to pay them.

Teams will often target specific players during free agency in order to fill holes in their lineup or rotation. For example, a team that is looking for a power hitter may target a player like Giancarlo Stanton who hit 59 home runs last season. A team that is looking for a starting pitcher may target a player like Yu Darvish, who was one of the best pitchers in the majors last season.

The free agency period can be helter-skelter, as teams try to quickly sign the best available players before they are snapped up by other teams. It is not unusual for contracts to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars during free agency as teams compete to build the best possible roster for the upcoming season

The Draft

baseball’s amateur draft is an annual event in which Major League Baseball (MLB) teams select High School and college baseball players The draft order is determined by reverse-standings, meaning the team with the Worst Record from the previous season selects first. Once the first round is complete, the draft continues with subsequent rounds consisting of 33 total selections each.
