The league was founded on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The league adopted the name of the National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with the rival National Basketball League (NBL). The league’s several international as well as individual team offices are directed out of its head quarters located in the Olympic Tower at 645 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City

-The Cavaliers have agreed to trade point guard Kyrie Irving to the Celtics in exchange for guard Isaiah Thomas forward Jae Crowder center Ante Zizic and the Nets’ 2018 first-Round Draft pick.
-The Jazz have agreed to trade forward Derrick Favors and guard Alec Burks to the Cavaliers for guard Rodney Hood and forward Joe Johnson
-The Hawks have agreed to trade center Dwight Howard to the Hornets for center Miles Plumlee, guard Marco Belinelli and the rights to Turkish forward Enes Kanter
-The Clippers have agreed to trade point guard Chris Paul to the Rockets for guards Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams forward Sam Dekker, shooting guard Deandre Liggins center Montrezl Harrell a future first-round draft pick and cash considerations.
Free agency
Free agency in the NBA is when a player who has finished their contract with one team becomes eligible to sign with any other team. This usually happens when a player’s contract has expired, but it can also happen if a player is cut by their team or acquired by another team through a trade.
Players can only become free agents if they have played in the NBA for at least four years, or if they have been released by their team and have not signed with another team within seven days. Once a player becomes a free agent they are free to sign with any team that they choose.
The NBA’s free agency period typically begins on July 1st and runs through the end of September. During this time, teams can negotiate with free agents but no contracts can be signed until the start of the new NBA season in October.
