What is the NBA Lottery?

The NBA Lottery is a drawing held by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to determine the first three picks of the NBA Draft The lottery began in 1985, and was established as a way to discourage tanking (deliberately losing games in order to get a higher draft pick).

The lottery is held every year before the regular season ends. All non-playoff teams are entered into the lottery, and each team is given a certain number of Ping-Pong balls (or “lottery balls”) based on their record. The team that wins the lottery does not necessarily get the first overall pick – it just means that they can choose any pick from any non-playoff team in the draft. So, if a team with a worse record than you wins the lottery, you could still end up with a higher draft pick than them.

There is a 1/14 chance that any given team will win the lottery, and a 6/14 chance that a team with one of the three worst records will win it. The odds of getting the first overall pick are 1/1000 for the worst team 2/1000 for the second-Worst Team and 3/1000 for the third-worst team

How to Watch the NBA lottery
