NBA Teams With the Most Cap Space

As the NBA’s Free agency period approaches, teams are preparing to make offers to players who will become free agents on July 1. One of the most important factors in making those offers is a team’s salary cap situation.

The salary cap for the 2019-20 season has been set at $109 million, and each team must stay below that figure. However, teams can go over the salary cap to sign their own free agents using a mechanism called the “cap holds

With that in mind, here are the five NBA teams with the most cap space heading into free agency

1. Los Angeles Clippers: $67.1 million
2. Dallas Mavericks $66.9 million
3. Indiana Pacers $65.6 million
4. Brooklyn Nets $61.5 million
5. Atlanta Hawks $60.8 million

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers currently have the most amount of cap space in the NBA at $74.6 million. This is due to a number of factors, including the departure of Lebron James in free agency as well as trades made during the 18-19 season The Cavaliers are followed by the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns who both have over $60 million in cap space.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers currently have the most space under the NBA’s salary cap with over $60 million in room. The team is in a good position to sign multiple free agents this offseason, as they look to rebuild following a disappointing 2016-17 campaign. Other teams with a significant amount of cap space include the Atlanta Hawks Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks

Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets currently have the most cap space in the NBA, with over $46 million in space. The Nets are followed by the Charlotte Hornets ($34 million), the Phoenix Suns ($32 million), and the Sacramento Kings ($30 million).

Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers are an American professional basketball team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Pacers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division The Pacers were first established in 1967 as a member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and became one of four ABA teams to join the NBA in 1976 as part of the ABA–NBA merger They play their home games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse The team is named after Indiana’s history with the Indianapolis 500’s pace cars and with the harness racing industry.

The Pacers have won three championships, all in the ABA. The Pacers were Eastern Conference champions in 2000 and made it to the NBA Finals in 2000 and 2012. The franchise has won six division titles. Seven Hall of Fame players – Reggie Miller Chris Mullin, Alex English, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, George McGinnis, and Bob Netolicky – played with the Pacers for multiple seasons.

Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz currently have the most cap space amongst NBA Teams They are projected to have around $30 million in space this offseason. The Jazz are in a good position to make a big free agent splash or two this summer.

Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings currently have the most cap space in the NBA at $38.2 million. They are followed by the Atlanta Hawks ($37.8 million) and the Dallas Mavericks ($36.6 million). The Kings have been aggressive in free agency in recent years signing players like Harrison Barnes and Cory Joseph to long-term deals.

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons currently have the most cap space in the NBA at over $37 million. This means that they have room to sign free agents and extend current players. The pistons will be looking to add talent to a team that finished last season with a record of 29-53.

New York Knicks

The Knicks currently have the most cap space in the NBA, with over $70 million in available space. They are followed by the Cleveland Cavaliers who have just over $40 million in cap space. These two teams are well ahead of the pack, as the next closest team (the Houston Rockets) has just over $17 million in cap space.

The Knicks’ recent string of bad luck has left them with a lot of available cap space. They have missed the playoffs for four straight seasons and have not won a playoff series since 2000. Their inability to attract top free agents has been a big factor in their struggles, but they hope that their significant amount of cap space will help them turn things around.

Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic currently have the most cap space in the NBA, with room to sign a maximum-salaried player. The Magic are followed by the Atlanta Hawks Brooklyn Nets Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets
