Through thick and thin, the North Greenville Baseball team has stayed close-knit, always working together to achieve their common goal: a conference championship. This season, under the leadership of Head Coach Matt Atherton, the team has hit their stride, currently holding a 20-5 record and ranking second in their conference.

Atherton credits the team’s success to the family-like atmosphere within the squad. “We have a great group of guys who are really close off the field and that carries over onto the field,” he said. “They’re always working hard and they know that I have their back no matter what.”

This close bond has been key in helping the team overcome some early season struggles. After starting off the year 5-5, many wrote off the Crusaders as a title contender. But Atherton and his squad refused to give up, using their close relationship to stay focused and motivated.

“We just kept telling each other that we knew we were better than our record indicated and that we needed to keep working hard,” said senior catcher Michael Hitzelberg. “Coach Atherton did a great job of keeping us positive and keeping us focused on our goals.”

The team’s hard work paid off, as they went on an incredible 15-game Winning Streak vaulting them up the Conference Standings With only a few games left in the regular season North Greenville looks like they will be one of the top seeds in the upcoming conference tournament

Atherton is proud of how far his team has come but knows that there is still work to be done if they want to achieve their ultimate goal. “We’ve had a great season so far but we can’t take our foot off the gas now,” he said. “We need to keep playing with that same sense of urgency and determination if we want to win a conference championship.”
