The What-Ifs

It is hard to lose, no matter what the circumstances are. The NGU men’s Basketball team lost their first game of the season against Pfeiffer University on Tuesday night, 72-64. This was a tough loss for the team, as they were previously undefeated. Coach Brad Hewitt said, “Our guys played their tails off tonight. We just didn’t make enough plays down the stretch.”

Even though they lost, there are still things that the team can take away from this game. They fought hard and never gave up, which is always commendable. In addition, this loss may be just what the team needs in order to refocus and come back even stronger. As senior guard Isaiah Simmons said, “We will use this loss as motivation.”

The What-Ifs
It is human nature to think about what could have been done differently in order to achieve a different outcome. In regards to Tuesday night’s game, there are a few what-if scenarios that could have potentially changed the outcome.

What if NGU had made their free throws?]; They only shot 50% from the line, while Pfeiffer shot 80%. Free throws are crucial and can often be the difference between winning and losing.

What if NGU had rebound better? Pfeiffer out-rebounded NGU 37 to 31. This gave them extra opportunities on offense and made it difficult for NGU to get second chance points.

What if NGU had taken better care of the ball? They turned it over 16 times compared to Pfeiffer’s 9 turnovers. These turnovers led to easy points for Pfeiffer and made it difficult for NGU to get into a rhythm offensively.

Bottom line, there are always things that could have been done differently in order to achieve a different result. However, it is important for the team to learn from their mistakes and move on. Losses happen and that is okay. What matters most is how you respond to them.
