The club is commonly known in European and Greek basketball as Panathinaikos OPAP, or simply as Panathinaikos B.C. The name creates a link to the field of athletics (pan-, combining form of pan meaning “all”; athlos, genitive singular of athlos meaning “competition, contest”; and -ikos, suffix forming adjectives from nouns) and it is also a multi-sport club with departments for other sports such as football (Panathinaikos A.O.), water polo etc.
The parent athletic association of the club is AO Atlétiko Gymnastíriko Omilós Filathlon Pireás (“Athletic Gymnastic Club of Piraeus ‘Panathinaikos’”), founded in 1908, while the actual basketball team was created in 1919, with the merger of two Athens-based teams, Union Gymnastique Athenienne and Olympia Athletic Clubde Athènes.
