Under Williams’ leadership, the team has posted winning records in five of the last six seasons. In 2018, the team made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament defeating the University of Texas at Arlington in the first round before falling to the University of Notre Dame in the second round. In 2019, the team once again qualified for the NCAA Tournament this time defeating Purdue University in the first round before losing to Duke University in the second round.

The team has seen a number of talented players come through its ranks over the years, including current Los Angeles Lakers player Reggie Bullock and former Boston Celtics player Jarell Eddie. With Williams at the helm and a roster full of talented players, Regent University’s Basketball team is one to watch in the coming years.

The Team’s Star Players

Senior guard/forward Davion Mitchell is the team’s leading scorer. He averages 22 points per game and is a strong defender. Mitchell was named the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Player of the Year and first-team All-CCSA. He was also named to the NABC Defensive Player of the Year Watch List.

Junior guard Jaheam Cornwall is another one of the team’s top scorers Cornwall averages 16 points per game and is a great three-point shooter. He was named second-team All-CCSA and was voted CCSA Tournament MVP after leading the team to victory in the conference tournament

Sophomore forward Trayvon Palmer rounds out the team’s top three scorers. Palmer averages 12 points per game and is a versatile player who can shoot from long range or take it to the basket. He was named to the CCSA All-Tournament team and was voted co- Defensive Player of the Year by his teammates.

The Team’s Coaches

Regent University’s basketball team has seen a lot of success in recent years and much of that is thanks to the hard work of its coaches.

Head coach Byron Spriggs took over the team in 2013, and has since led them to two conference championships and one NCAA Division II tournament appearance. He was named Coach of the Year in both 2016 and 2017.

Assistant coach Jamila Johnson joined the team in 2014 and has been a key part of their success. She was named Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016.
