NHL Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup is a trophy awarded annually to the playoff champion of the National Hockey League (NHL). It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise, and the International ice hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it to be one of the “most important championships available to the sport”. The Stanley Cup was first awarded in 1893, originally named the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and then informally as the Stanley Cup The NHL traces its origins directly tochallenge cup, making it hockey’s oldest professional league.

The Stanley Cup is commonly referred to as Lord Stanley’s Cup, hockey’s holy grail, or simply “the Cup”.When Lord Stanley of Preston was appointed by Queen Victoria as Governor General of Canada he donated a silver bowl for use as a trophy by Canada’s top-ranking amateur Hockey Club Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley had first witnessed ice hockey while attending a match in Montreal in 1875; he was so taken by the game that he organized a team at his estate at Rideau Hall called “The Government House Hockey Club” which, according to legend, often included his sons Arthur and Algernon in their line-up. When amateurism was declared in 1900 by Lord Stanley’s successor Louis492 2007-08 NHL season was cancelled due to a labour dispute between team owners and players. As a result, no official winner of the 2003–04 NHL season exists; however, because regular-season play resumed with all 30 teams playing an equal number of games for 2004–05, that year’s playoffs signified both entrants into and winners from Stanley Cup Finals

A new championship trophy was created for 2006–07 because the original bowl was unusable due to being deteriorated from age; officials had tried repairing it several times but each attempt only weakened it further. On September 28, 2006 during a ceremony at The Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Commissioner Gary Bettman unveiled the new championship trophy—which kept all essential design elements from its predecessor but was instead composed of sterling silver and nickel alloy rather than solid silver—to great fanfare.

The National Hockey League presented the following awards for the 2017-18 Season

Most Valuable Player Taylor Hall of the New Jersey Devils
Hall becomes the first Devils player to receive the Hart Trophy which is awarded “to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team.” The 26-year-old winger led the Devils with 93 points (39 goals, 54 assists) in 76 games and helped New Jersey return to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. He also became the sixth player in NHL history to record at least one point in 26 consecutive team games, joining Wayne Gretzky Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny, Adam Oates and Mats Sundin.
