RIT Women’s Hockey: A Tradition of Excellence

RIT women’s hockey began in 1977, when a group of students formed a team and began playing against local High School teams. The team was officially recognized as a varsity sport in 1981, and began competing in Division III of the American Women’s college hockey Alliance (AWCHA). The team won its first conference championship in 1982, and went on to win five more championships in the next six years.

In 1988, RIT became one of the charter members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West women’s Hockey League The team won its first ECAC West championship in 1992, and has won a total of eight conference championships. In 2005, RIT moved to Division I of the NCAA, and won its first NCAA Division I championship in 2012.
