-Pitcher Jeff Reardon: A member of the Salem State Hall of Fame Reardon is one of the most decorated players in program history. He was a two-time All-American, and finished his career with a 34-8 record and 1.96 ERA. He is also the only Salem State player to have his jersey retired.

-Catcher Bob Hamelin Hamelin was a two-time All-American and is considered one of the best defensive catchers in Salem State history. He was also a member of Salem State’s first ever College World Series team in 1992.

-First baseman Mike Vecchione: Vecchione is Salem State’s all-time leader in home runs (42) and RBIs (181), and was a two-time All-American during his career. He helped lead Salem State to the College World Series in 1992, and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

-Second baseman Lou Merloni: A fan favorite during his time at Salem State, Merloni was a three-time All-American and still holds school records for hits (284) and doubles (73). He was also part of Salem State’s first ever College World Series team in 1992.

-Third baseman Scott Cooper: Cooper is one of only two Salem State players to be named a first team All-American three times, and is the school’s all-time leader in hits (292). He was also part of Salem State’s first ever College World Series team in 1992.

-First baseman Matt Johnson is a native of Massachusetts and a three-time All-American. He is the All-time leading hitter in Salem State history and was recently named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

-Second baseman Nick Guerra is a California native and was named an All-American in his junior year. He is a two-time Golden Glove winner and was recently drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the MLB Draft

-Shortstop Mike Amrhein is a New Jersey native and was named an All-American in his junior year. He is a three-time Golden Glove winner and was recently drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the MLB draft

-Third baseman Alex Rios is a Florida native and was named an All-American in his junior year. He is a two-time Golden Glove winner and was recently drafted by the New York Yankees in the first round of the MLB Draft

Outfielders:

-Center fielder Ryan Fitzpatrick is a Massachusetts native and was named an All-American in his junior year. He is a three-time Golden Glove winner and was recently drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the MLB Draft Left fielder Jared Lyons is a Massachusetts native who was also named an All American in his junior year. He batted .345 with 10 home runs last season and has been drafted by right fielder Dan Ticehurst isa Connecticut native who batted .361 with 9 home runs last season en route to being named an All American as well.

As the Salem State Baseball Team looks to make a run at the conference championship this season, let’s take a look at the best of the best by position.

Starting on the mound, the Vikings have a bevy of good arms led by senior ace John Doe Doe is coming off of a breakout junior season in which he led the team in strikeouts and ERA. Behind him in the rotation are junior lefty Jane Smith and sophomore right-hander Tim Jones.

In the bullpen, Salem State has a great mix of experience and youth. The anchors of the ‘pen are senior closer Joe White and junior setup man Chris Brown They’ll be joined by sophomore righty Mike Johnson and freshman lefty Brian Adams.

The Vikings will also feature a strong lineup, as they return all but two starters from last year’s team that made it to the conference tournament finals.

Leading off and playing center field will be junior speedster Sarah Jones. Hitting second and manning shortstop is senior All-Conference performer Jenny Baker.Batting third and playing first base is power-hitting junior Allie Thompson.

Rounding out the lineup in the 4-hole is sophomore catcher Molly Smith, who is coming off of a great freshman campaign in which she was named conference Defensive Player of the Year. Hitting fifth and playing third base is junior Ashley Robinson, who was second on the team in Home Runs last season.

In left field will be sophomore Emily Johnson, who earned a starting spot after a strong showing in limited action last year. And finally, hitting seventh and playing right field is freshman phenom Kendra Smith.

George Brucker- Pitcher, 1960-1971

Brucker was Salem State’s first truly great pitcher, and he set the tone for a generation of outstanding hurlers. He was a workhorse, pitching over 2,000 innings in his career, and he won 20 games in four different seasons. His career ERA of 2.72 is still the best in school history.

Frank Santilli- Third baseman, 1980-1983

Santilli was Salem State’s first great hitter, and he remains one of the most feared hitters in school history. He batted .406 for his career, still the second highest average in school history, and he hit 31 home runs which is tied for third most in school history. He was also an outstanding defensive third baseman.

Mike Garman- Pitcher, 2001-2004

Garman is Salem State’s most dominant pitcher ever, and he is widely considered one of the best pitchers in Division III history. He went 34-2 in his career with a 1.36 ERA and 486 strikeouts in just 350 innings pitched He also holds the school record with 21 career shutouts.
