The Warriors were founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors a charter member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). In 1962, the franchise relocated to San Francisco and became known as the San Francisco Warriors until 1971, when its name was changed to the current Golden State Warriors Since moving to Oakland in 1971, the team has reached eight NBA Finals winning four NBA championships in 1947, 1956, 1975, and 2015.

San Francisco won the 2017 NBA Finals their fourth NBA Championship in franchise history and their first since relocating to San Francisco from Philadelphia in 1962. The Warriors added four All-Stars while winning their third straight division title, setting the NBA regular season wins record with 73, and becoming the first team in NBA history to start the season 16–0. Success continued in the playoffs, as they went a perfect 16–1 en route to capturing their second consecutive NBA Championship which culminated in a Game 5 victory against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers
Overall, the team has appeared in ten NBA Finals winning six of them. With their all-time win loss record of 2,446–1,325 (.649), they are currently sixth among all NBA teams and third in wins behind only the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics they are also second behind only those two teams for winning percentage. Eight Hall of Fame players—Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain Nate Thurmond, Chris Mullin, Paul Arizin, Tom Meschery, John Havlicek and Bob Cousy—have played for Golden State while on his way to enshrinement; Barry and Mullin are also members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as players while Head Coach Steve Kerr is also a member as a player and coach.

The team was established in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). In 1962, the franchise relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and was renamed the San Francisco Warriors In 1971, the team changed its geographic moniker to Golden State California’s state nickname. Since 1972, the team’s home court has been the Oracle Arena (formerly Oakland Coliseum Arena) in Oakland; it had previously played at various arenas in San Francisco proper up until 1971.
