St. Lawrence has particularly intense rivalries with the University of Michigan the University of Minnesota and the University of North Dakota These rivalries are shaped by a long history of success and tradition on the part of all four programs.

The St. Lawrence-Michigan rivalry is perhaps the most well-known and longest-standing of all the team’s rivalries. The two teams have played each other nearly 200 times since their first meeting in 1921, making it one of the oldest and most storied rivalries in college hockey The rivalry is also one of the most evenly matched, with Michigan holding a slim lead in the all-time series 104-102-8.

The St. Lawrence-Minnesota rivalry is also a longstanding one, dating back to 1927. The two teams have met nearly 200 times since then, making it one of the oldest rivalries in college hockey Like the St. Lawrence-Michigan rivalry, it is also one of the most evenly matched, with Minnesota holding a slim lead in the all-time series 105-103-8.

The St. Lawrence University Hockey Tradition

The St. Lawrence University men’s Hockey team is one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division I hockey history. With five NCAA Tournament appearances, three Frozen Four appearances, and one National Championship the Saints have cemented their place among the elite in college hockey

The team got its start in 1925 when a group of students formed a club team. The team played its first game against a local High School and lost 9-0. Despite the lopsided score, the team was hooked on the sport and quickly began to improve. By the early 1930s, the team was playing against some of the best college teams in the country and even managed to beat eventual National Champion Boston College twice in 1933.

In 1937, St. Lawrence became a charter member of the newly-formed Ecac Hockey conference, which is still considered one of the premier conferences in college hockey today. The Saints would go on to win the first ever ECAC Hockey tournament in 1938, defeating Dartmouth 3-2 in overtime in the Championship game

The 1950s were a golden era for St. Lawrence hockey, as the team made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and won two ECAC championships. The 1960s were also successful for the Saints, as they won another ECAC title and made two more NCAA tournament appearances.

The 1970s saw St. Lawrence’s greatest success to date, as the team won its only National Championship in 1976 and made three straight Frozen Four appearances from 1976 to 1978. The team has also won four Fleming Cups as ECAC regular season champions and six Whitelaw Cups as ECAC tournament champions during its history.

St. Lawrence University has a long and rich tradition of excellence in hockey, and continues to be one of the top programs in NCAA Division I today.
