The History of Summit Baseball
Organized baseball has been a part of life in Summit, New Jersey for over a century. The first recorded games took place in the late 1800s, and the sport has been played continuously in the community since then. In the early years, games were organized informally among teams of local businesses churches, and other groups.
The first formal league in Summit was established in 1912, when four teams joined together to form the Summit Baseball Association This league included teams from Roselle Park, Millburn, and other towns in the area. The league lasted for several years and then disbanded during World War I.
In 1931, the Summit Baseball Association was reformed with six teams. This league included both amateur and semi-professional teams from Summit and the surrounding communities. The league continued to grow and by 1940 it had twelve teams.During World War II, the league continued to operate with reduced rosters due to the draft. After the war ended, the number of teams in the league increased to sixteen.
The 1950s saw a decline in organized baseball in Summit, as many young men left town to start families or pursue careers. In an effort to keep baseball alive in Summit, four local businessmen formed a new semi-professional team called the Braves in 1954. The team was made up of former Major League players and local standouts who had finished their collegiate careers. The team was very successful and helped to generate interest in baseball among the residents of Summit.
In 1960, a group of concerned citizens met to discuss ways to improve youth baseball in Summit. As a result of this meeting, the Little League program was established in 1961 with four teams:the Braves, Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers. These teams were sponsored by local businesses and organizations such as Lion’s Club International and Kiwanis Club. Since its inception, Little League Baseball has been an important part of life in Summit
