The History of Tennessee Baseball
Tennessee has a long and illustrious history when it comes to baseball. Dating back to the late 1800s, the sport has been a popular pastime for residents of the Volunteer State.
In 1885, the first organized baseball game was played in Tennessee between Chattanooga and Nashville. The following year, the first professional baseball team in Tennessee was formed in Nashville. This team would eventually become known as the Nashville Vols.
The Nashville Vols were one of the most successful minor league teams in baseball history Between their formation in 1898 and their last season in 1963, the Vols won 17 league championships. They also produced numerous Major League Baseball stars, including Hall of Famer Hank Aaron
In 1997, minor League Baseball returned to Tennessee with the formation of the Nashville Sounds. The Sounds currently play in the Pacific Coast League and are affiliated with the Milwaukee Brewers They have won two league championships since their inception and play their home games at historic Herschel Greer Stadium.
