The University of California Riverside men’s Basketball team defeated UC Irvine in their Season Opener 79-72. It was a back-and-forth game, with neither team leading by more than seven points. UCR was able to pull away in the end, thanks to strong shooting from senior guard Jaylon Henderson and junior guardDominic Artis. Henderson finished with 22 points and Artis had 21. The win was a good start to the season for the Highlanders, who are looking to improve on their 13-17 record from last year.

In a highly anticipated Season Opener the UC Riverside Men’s basketball team took on rival UC Irvine. The Highlanders came out strong in the first half, but the Anteaters battled back to take a slim lead at halftime. UCR came out firing in the second half, however, and ultimately defeated UCI by a score of 73-67. With the win, the Highlanders start their season 1-0 and will look to build on the momentum in their next game.

UCR trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but went on a 20-5 run in the second half to take the lead for good. Sophomore guard George Fantus led the way for the Highlanders with 22 points, while senior forward Secean Johnson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. UCI was led by junior guard John Capobianco with 19 points.

UCR will look to build on their season opening win as they take on San Diego State on the road next week.

In a battle of two ten teams the UC Riverside men’s basketball team came back from a halftime deficit to defeat UC Irvine 63-57 on the road in the season opener for both teams.

The Highlanders (1-0) trailed by seven points at the break but used a strong second half to come out on top. UCR held UCI (0-1) to just 30 percent shooting in the second half and outscored the Anteaters by nine points in the second stanza.

Junior guard Dikymbe Martin led the way for Riverside, scoring 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range Sophomore forward Ajani Kennedy had a strong all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

The Highlanders will now turn their attention to their home opener which will take place on Saturday, November 17th against San Diego State Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM.

The Highlanders trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, but rallied to take the lead late in the game and then held on for the win. Senior guard Jaylen Bland led the way for UCR, scoring 22 points. Junior forwardSecean Johnson had a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Highlanders will be back in action on Sunday, November 19th, when they host San Diego State at the SRC Arena.

The UC Riverside Men’s basketball team won its first game of the season on the road against UC Irvine on Tuesday night, despite a slow start. The Highlanders trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but came back to take the lead in the second half and held on for a 72-69 victory.

Junior guard Dikymbe Martin led UCR with 15 points, while senior forward M.J. Rourke added 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Chance Murray also chipped in 12 points for the Highlanders.

UC Riverside will look to build on its season-opening win when it returns home to host CSU Bakersfield on Friday Night at 7:00 p.m.

The UCR Men’s Basketball team travelled to UCI to start their season on the road and came back from a slow start in the first half to defeat UCI 65-58. UCR started off the game shooting poorly from the field, going 6-23 (26%) in the first half, but improved their shooting in the second half, going 15-28 (54%). The Highlanders also struggled with turnovers in the first half, giving the ball away 9 times, but only coughed it up 3 times in the second half. UCR did a good job of getting to the Free Throw Line in this game, shooting 26 Free throws total. They made 17 of them (65%).

The story of this game was UCR’s defense. They held UCI to 58 points, which is 14 points below their season average. The Anteaters only shot 34% from the field for the game and only made 5 three-pointers. The Highlanders also did a good job of contesting shots and forcing UCI into tough shots. They had 8 blocks as a team.

This was a Big Win for UCR to start off their season and they will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season.

However, UCR came out strong in the second half and took the lead for good with about 12 minutes left in the game. The Highlanders were led by senior guard Dikymbe Martin, who scored 19 points, including 14 in the second half, to go along with 5 rebounds. Junior guard Dominick Pickett also had a big game for UCR, scoring 16 points and dishing out 5 assists. The Highlanders will look to build on this win as they continue their season on the road against San Diego State on November 6th.
