UNC has won five NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championships. The Tar Heels’ first came in 1957 under head coach Frank McGuire, when they defeated Wilt Chamberlain and the Kansas Jayhawks 54-53 in triple overtime for the title. The second came in 1982, again under McGuire, when a Ralph Sampson-led Tar Heel team took down James Worthy Sam Perkins, and company from Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown Hoyas 63-62 for the crown. In 1993, Dean Smith finally led UNC to glory, as the Tar Heels rode Derrick Phelps, Donald Williams, and George Lynch to a 77-71 win over Michigan’s “Fab Five” in the Final Four and a 77-74 victory over Kentucky in the Championship game Smith’s fourth title came in 2005, as North Carolina outlasted Illinois 75-70 despite trailing by double digits with less than five minutes to go in regulation. Roy Williams became just the second UNC Head Coach to win a National Championship in his first season when Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington, and company took down Mario Chalmers and Kansas 116-110 in overtime to end the 2007 season.
