The program has seen success at the Division II level, winning eight conference championships and making eleven appearances in the NCAA tournament The Lopers have also produced numerous All-Americans and professional players.
UNK’s basketball tradition began in 1903, when the school fielded its first team. The team was successful from the start, winning the state championship in 1904. In 1922, UNK joined the Nebraska collegiate athletic conference (NCAC), where it remained until 1957. During that time, the Lopers won eight conference championships and made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament
In 1957, UNK joined the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC). The MAC was a regional conference that included schools from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri. The Lopers won the MAC championship in their first year in the conference and made seven appearances in the NCAA tournament during their time in the MAC.
In 1971, UNK joined the Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC). The CSIC was a Midwest-based conference that included schools from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. UNK won four CSIC championships and made three appearances in the NCAA tournament during its time in the conference.
In 1991, UNK joined its current conference, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The MIAA is a Midwest-based conference that includes schools from Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. UNK has won four MIAA championships and made seven appearances in the NCAA tournament since joining the conference.

Since its inception in 1905, the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s basketball program has been a tradition of excellence. With a culture of commitment to the game, UNK has produced some of the best basketball teams in Nebraska history.
The early years of UNK basketball were marked by success on the court, with the 1905 team claiming the state championship In the years that followed, UNK teams consistently finished near the top of the Conference Standings In fact, from 1905 to 1940, UNK had an overall record of .500 or better in 25 out of 36 seasons.
During this era, UNK also produced some of its best players. In 1922, Elmer Gomer became the first UNK player to be named All-American. Gomer went on to have a successful coaching career at both the High School and collegiate levels. Other standout players from this period include Vic Ketchum, who was named All-American in 1938, and Bob Stefanski, who led UNK to its first conference championship in 1939.
In recent years UNK has continued its tradition of excellence on the court. The 2010-11 team won a share of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title, while the 2013-14 team won both the MIAA regular season and tournament championships. The 2015-16 team also claimed an MIAA Tournament Championship
Off the court, UNK has been committed to helping its student-athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. In 2016-17, 19 UNK basketball players were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
