Vassar Baseball: The Games that Will Make or Break the Season
It’s that time of year again! Spring is in the air, chicken pot pies are in the oven, and the sweet sound of baseball cracking off a well-oiled mitt just summoned me from my winter slumber. For those of you who share my love for America’s pastime (and food), here’s a Vassar Baseball schedule the games that will make or break the season.
3/3 vs Columbia @ 1pm
The Bombers start their season off with a tough test against Columbia. The Lions finished last year with a solid 23-17 record, good for second in the Ivies. Vassar, on the other hand, had a forgettable 5-28 campaign and will be looking to turn things around in 2018. The key to this game, and really any game on their schedule, will be generating offense. The Bombers simply couldn’t score runs last year, averaging a measly 2.7 per game. That number needs to go up if they want to have any shot at being competitive this season. 1pm at Eaton Field.
3/10 @ Hamilton @ 1pm
After getting their feet wet against Columbia, Vassar travels to Upstate New York to take on Hamilton. The Continentals are coming off of a 2016 campaign in which they went 13-23 overall and 5-13 in NESCAC play. much like Vassar, they struggled offensively, averaging just 3 runs per game. This looks like it could be a high scoring affair, as both teams will be looking to put last year’s struggles behind them. 1pm at Herrick Diamond.
4/14 vs Trinity @ 1pm
The Bantams come into town for what should be one of the most exciting games on the schedule. Trinity is always one of the better teams in NESCAC (they finished 2nd last year with a 25-15 overall record), and should provide a good barometer for where the Bombers are at this point in the season. offensively, Trinity was about middle of the pack last year, but their real strength was pitching – they compiled a team ERA of 3.09, good for 5th in NESCAC . If Vassar can keep this one close going into late innings then they have a chance, but they’ll need to put some runs on the board early and often if they want to come out victorious on April 14th .1pm at Eaton Field
