Virginia Baseball Breaks Record

The Virginia Cavaliers baseball team set the record for the most wins in a season with 59.

Introduction

In 2014, the Virginia baseball team set a new school record for wins in a season. The team finished the season with a 54-12 record, breaking the previous record of 53-13 set in 2011.

The team’s success was due in part to its strong pitching staff, which included ace pitcher Nick Howard and closer Branden Kline. The Cavaliers also had a potent offense, led by sluggers Mike Papi and Derek Fisher

The Game

In a game that was tight throughout, the Virginia Cavaliers baseball team broke the record for most runs in a game, defeating the Richmond Spiders 25-24. Thecame from behind in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the lead and secure the victory.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. The Spiders took an early lead, but the Cavaliers battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Spiders responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead, but Virginia answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-7 lead.

The Spiders once again took the lead in the top of the seventh, but Virginia responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake a 10-9 lead. Richmond then scored three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to take a 15-10 lead into Virginia’s final at-bat.

The Cavaliers showed their resiliency once again, scoring five runs in the bottom of ninth to take a 15-15 tie into extras. In the Tenth Inning both teams scored three runs apiece to keep things even at 18-18. Finally, in the eleventh inning, Virginia broke through with four runs to take a 22-18 lead. Richmond would not go down without a fight, scoring six runs in their half of eleventh to retake a 24-22 lead. However, Virginia would not be denied, as they scored three runs in their half of eleventh to walk off with a 25-24 victory.
