Heading into the 2020 season, the Wake Forest Baseball roster is loaded with talent. The Deacons will look to build on their 2019 campaign in which they went 30-28 (16-14 ACC) and reached the ACC tournament semifinals. Here’s a look at the Wake Forest baseball roster position by position:

Pitchers
Righthanders Alecandroid Kirkpatrick, Jared Shuster, and Cain Ramirez will lead the Deacons’ pitching staff. All three are coming off impressive 2019 seasons and will look to build on that success in 2020. Lefties Conor procedural Morgan and Chris Mighty Mouse Rumfelt will also play key roles out of the bullpen.

Catchers
Jack Trotter and Logan Harvey will be the Deacons’ primary backstops this season. Trotter is coming off a strong 2019 campaign in which he hit .276 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. Harvey is a transfer from UNC-Greensboro who impressed during fall scrimmages.

Infielders
The Deacons’ infield will be anchored by first baseman Johnny Aiello, second baseman Jake Mueller, shortstop Danny Mondrone, and third baseman Chris Lanzoni. Aiello is a preseason All-American and one of the top power hitters in college baseball Mueller was an All-ACC selection last season while Mondrone and Lanzoni provide solid defense up the middle.

Outfielders
The Deacons’ outfield features a mix of experience and youth. Seniors Steve Wilkerson and Gavin Sheets will patrol left and right field respectively while freshman Shane Muntz is expected to start in center field.

A Closer Look at the Infielders

Wake Forest’s infield consists of some of the most experienced and battle-tested players on the team. Redshirt senior first baseman Gavin Sheets, who is entering his fourth season with the Deacons, has been a mainstay in the middle of the Wake Forest lineup and is one of the team’s leaders both on and off the field. Joining Sheets at first base is junior Jonathan Pryor, who made 14 starts there last season.

Sophomore Bruce Dillman returns as the starting second baseman after a solid freshman campaign in which he started all 56 games. Dillman will be flanked by either junior Will Craig (who started 37 games at third base last season) or sophomore Matt Dobson (who made 11 starts at third base as a freshman).

At shortstop, redshirt sophomore Ben Breazeale will be looking to build on a strong freshman season in which he started 45 games. Rounding out the infield is junior third baseman Jon Wilcox, who made 28 starts at the position last year.

Outfielders to Watch

Wake Forest will have a talented and experienced outfield in 2018, as all three starters from last year’s team return. Senior Stuart Fairchild will anchor the group in center field after being named a preseason All-American by both Baseball America and perfect game Fairchild is coming off a junior season in which he hit .341 with 12 home runs 61 RBI and 20 stolen bases en route to being named the ACC’s Co-Player of the Year. He’ll be joined in the outfield by junior Jon Duvall and sophomore Logan Harvey.

Duvall was an honorable mention All-ACC selection last year after hitting .276 with seven homers and 39 RBI. Harvey, meanwhile, is coming off a strong freshman campaign in which he batted .288 with four homers, 28 RBI and 13 stolen bases.

As the 2021 season rapidly approaches, it is time to familiarize yourself with the Wake Forest baseball team This season, the Demon Deacons have a talented and experienced pitching staff that will be looking to lead the team back to the NCAA tournament Here are the pitchers you need to know:

Senior right-handed pitcher Colin Peluse was named a preseason All-American by perfect game and is expected to be one of the top pitchers in the country. He was also named a preseason first-team All-ACC selection. Last season, Peluse was 6-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 15 starts. He struck out 103 batters in 93 innings pitched and opponents hit just .234 against him. Peluse will be the Friday Night starter for Wake Forest and is expected to be one of the top pitchers in the ACC.

Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Will Hamilton is coming off a breakout 2019 season in which he posted a 2.08 ERA in 13 relief appearances. He struck out 27 batters in 26 innings pitched and opponents hit just .192 against him. Hamilton will once again be an important member of the Wake Forest bullpen.

Junior right-handed pitcher Parker Woods returns as Wake Forest’s Sunday starter after going 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA last season. In 16 starts, he struck out 95 batters in 92 innings pitched and opponents hit just .258 against him. Woods will look to build on his successful 2019 campaign and emerge as one of Wake Forest’s top starters this season.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jared Shuster made 13 starts as a freshman last season and fared well, going 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA while striking out 74 batters in 70 innings pitched. Shuster will once again be in the starting rotation this season and will look to take another step forward as he continues to develop into an ACC-caliber starter.

Key Players to Watch

As the Wake Forest Baseball Team heads into the 2019 season, there are a few Key Players to watch.

Pitcher Jamie Newman who redshirted last season, is expected to be a leader on the mound. He was named the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2016 after going 9-3 with a 3.27 ERA.

Outfielder DJ Peterson is also one of the top returners for the Deacons. Peterson was second on the team in batting average (.321), home runs (9) and RBIs (39) last season.

Shortstop Jonathan Pryor is another player to keep an eye on. Pryor batted .273 with two Home Runs and 22 RBIs last season. He also stole 12 bases, which was second-best on the team.

Newcomers to the Roster

– George Kirby: The right-hander comes to Wake Forest after spending two seasons at Elon University He was named a preseason All-American by Baseball America and is expected to be a key member of the pitching staff.
– Connor Johnstone: The left-hander transferred to Wake after spending two seasons at East Carolina University. He will add depth to the pitching rotation and could be a key contributor out of the bullpen.

Catchers
– Bradley Morrison: A transfer from Seminole State College Morrison is expected to compete for a starting spot behind the plate. He was named a preseason All-American by perfect game USA and is one of the top catching prospects in the country.
Infielders
– Tyrone Brooks: A transfer from Louisburg College, Brooks will compete for playing time at first base and in the corner outfield spots. He was named a preseason All-American by Perfect Game USA and is one of the top power hitters in junior college baseball
Outfielders
– DJ Poteet: Poteet comes to Wake Forest after spending two seasons at Santa Ana College. He is expected to compete for a starting spot in center field and could also see time in left field

The Wake Forest Coaching Staff

Coach Tom Walter enters his ninth season as the Demon Deacons’ head baseball coach in 2020. The Deacons have won 30 or more games in each of the last five seasons under Walter, who has a career coaching record of 346-293 (.541). Walter was named the 2017 acc coach of the Year after leading Wake Forest to a school-record 43 wins, an ACC regular season title and a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals

Shane Muntz- Senior from Charlotte, North Carolina bats left-handed and throws right-handed.He is 6-3 and 225lbs. As a junior he hit .333 with three home runs and 25 RBIs.

Second basemen

Nick Cerretani- Senior from Smithfield, Rhode Island Bats left-handed and throws right-handed. He is 5-10 and 175lbs. As a junior he hit .277 with one home run and 18 RBIs.

Outfielders
Preston Scott- Senior from Chesapeake, Virginia. Bats right-handed and throws right-handed. He is 6-1 and 205lbs. As a junior he hit .308 with four home runs and 32 RBIs.

Infield:

First base: Bryce Fenical
Bryce is a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina He was named to the All-ACC Academic Team last year and is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member. Fenical is also a member of the 2019 Wake Forest baseball team that reached the College World Series

Second base: Jake Mueller
A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina Mueller is entering his senior season with the Deacons. He was named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team and was a member of the 2017 ACC Academic Honor Roll. Mueller is also a two-time recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Shortstop: Michael Bocchino
Bocchino is a junior from Suffern, New York. He was named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team and was a member of the 2017 ACC Academic Honor Roll. Bocchino has also been named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American and an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner.

Third base: Jonathon Cohen
Cohen is a senior from Jerusalem, Israel. He was named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team and was a member of both the 2017 and 2018 ACC Academic Honor Rolls. Cohen has also been named an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner.
catcher: Morgan White

White is a senior from Charlotte, North Carolina He was named to both the 2017 and 2018 All-ACC Academic Teams and was a member of both the 2016 and 2017 ACC Academic Honor Rolls. White has also been named an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner.
