Xavier Baseball Roster

The Xavier baseball team is made up of college student-athletes who compete at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The team is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), which is made up of schools located in the eastern United States Xavier has been a member of the A-10 since the conference’s inception in 1976.

The Head Coach of the Xavier baseball team is Scott Googins, who is entering his ninth season with the program in 2020. Googins has led Xavier to six NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 2017. The assistant coaches on Googins’ staff are Nathan Thompson and Keith Bunn.

The 2020 roster for the Xavier Baseball Team consists of 34 players, including 28 who are eligible to compete in games. The team’s roster includes 14 pitchers, six catchers, seven infielders, and seven outfielders. Of the 34 players on Xavier’s roster, 27 are freshmen or sophomores, four are juniors, and three are seniors.

Michael Anderson is a senior transfer from St. John’s University. He is a right-handed pitcher and outfielder who was named to the Big East All-Conference team in 2016.

Chad Kinsey is a junior transfer from Western Kentucky University He is a left-handed pitcher who was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2015.

Jack Meggs is a freshman from Seattle, Washington. He is an infielder and pitcher who was named to the perfect game USA All-American Team in 2016.

Pitchers
– Senior ace Kevin Gannon is back to anchor the pitching staff. He is coming off a strong junior campaign in which he posted a 3.42 ERA and struck out 100 batters in 103 innings pitched Gannon will be counted on to lead the way for a young but talented group of pitchers.

– Another experienced veteran, junior right-hander Matt Doyle, will look to build on a successful sophomore season in which he posted a 2.93 ERA in 55 innings pitched. Doyle has Good Stuff and should be one of the team’s top strikeout pitchers.

– Sophomore left-hander Jack Moore showed promise as a freshman last year and will look to take another step forward in his development this season. He has good movement on his pitches and should be able to generate a lot of weak contact from hitters.

– Freshman right-hander Ryan Lynch comes to Xavier with high expectations after being ranked as one of the top prospects in the state of Ohio. He has good size and plenty of velocity on his fastball. Lynch will look to make an immediate impact on the pitching staff this season.

Infielders
– Senior first baseman Jake Froehlich is back for his final season with Xavier. He is coming off a junior year in which he hit .305 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs. Froehlich provides some much-needed experience to an otherwise young infield group.

– Junior third baseman AJ DiFillippo had a breakout year at the plate last season, hitting .340 with eight Home Runs and 42 RBIs. He will look to build on that success this season and anchor the middle of the Xavier lineup.

– Sophomore shortstop Tommy Washick struggled offensively as a freshman but has shown improvement during fall practice and looks poised for a breakout year at the plate in 2020. He has good range defensively and should be one of Xavier’s top defenders up the middle this season

Gardner, second baseman Connor Bouchard, third baseman Andrew Kendrick and pitcher Ryan Curran all came to Xavier as freshmen and have started every game since. This group has helped lead the team to a conference championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances in their three years on campus.
