The Early Years

Yale Men’s Hockey traces its roots back to 1894, when a group of students formed a team to play against local rivals. The team quickly gained popularity, and soon began playing against some of the best college teams in the country. In 1896, the team won its first National Championship

The program continued to grow in popularity, and in 1900, Yale became one of the founding members of the Intercollegiate Hockey Association (IHA). The IHA was the first formal college Hockey League in the United States and Yale quickly established itself as one of the top teams in the league. Between 1900 and 1909, Yale won four IHA championships.

In 1909, Yale joined forces with Harvard and Princeton to form the Eastern Intercollegiate Hockey League (EIHL). The EIHL quickly became the premier college Hockey League in the country, and Yale was once again at the forefront of the sport. Between 1909 and 1922, Yale won eight EIHL championships.

1920s-1930s: A New Era

In 1920, Yale hired varsity Hockey Coach Andrew Copp as Head Coach Under Copp’s leadership, Yale won nine EIHL championships between 1920 and 1931. In 1922, Copp led Yale to its first perfect season (22-0), and in 1929, he led the team to its second perfect season (13-0). Copp is widely considered one of the best coaches in Yale history.

In 1930, Copp retired from coaching, but remained involved with Yale Hockey as an administrator until his death in 1940. His replacement as head coach was Clarence Wurtele Dawson, who had played for Copp from 1916 to 1918. Dawson coached at Yale for two seasons before leaving to coach at Princeton for one season. He returned to Yale in 1933 and coached for six more seasons before stepping down due to health reasons.

In the early years of Yale men’s hockey, the team experienced great success. Between 1900 and 1918, the team won nine Ivy League championships and six national championships. During this time, Yale men’s hockey was one of the most dominant teams in collegiate hockey.

However, after 1918, the team’s fortunes began to change. The team struggled in the 1920s and 1930s, failing to win an Ivy League championship or a National Championship In fact, the team did not even make it to the NCAA Tournament during this time.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that Yale men’s hockey began to experience success again. Between 1950 and 1959, the team won five Ivy League championships and two national championships. This period marked the beginning of what has been dubbed “the first golden era” of Yale men’s hockey.

The Second Golden Era of Yale Men’s Hockey

Since the turn of the century, Yale hockey has undergone a remarkable transformation. From 2000-01 to present day, the Bulldogs have won three NCAA National Championships (out of a possible five), more than any other team in the country. In that span, Yale has also won seven Ivy League regular season Championships and six Ivy League Tournament Championships. Yale has appeared in the NCAA tournament eleven times in the last eighteen years, including seven times in the last eight years. This string of success is unprecedented in Yale history and has firmly established Yale as one of the premier college hockey programs in the country.

The modern ERA of Yale Men’s Hockey

Since the early 1990s, Yale men’s hockey has been one of the top programs in NCAA Division I hockey. In that time, the Bulldogs have won two NCAA national championships (in 2013 and 2018), made 11 Frozen Four appearances, and have won 14 Ivy League championships. Under Head Coach Keith Allain ’80, Yale has been especially successful, winning eight Ivy League titles and making seven NCAA tournament appearances in his 14 seasons at the helm.

The team has won two National Championships, in 2013 and 2018, and has made it to the Frozen Four six times in the last ten years.
