The Gophers began the season ranked #19, but fell out of the rankings after losing their first game to Louisville. They would not be ranked again until late in the season, when they rose to #18 after winning 12 of their last 13 games. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Ohio State

The Gophers finished with a 27-7 Overall Record and were Big Ten Conference Co-Champions, sharing the regular season title with Indiana. They were also NCAA Tournament participants, reaching the Elite Eight before losing to eventual National Champion Louisville. This was the first time in school history that the Gophers made it to the Elite Eight.

This was Dutcher’s final season as head coach he would be succeeded by Clem Haskins prior to the following season.
