They finished the season 284 overall and 162 in Pac-10 play to win their sixth consecutive regular season conference title After losing to Oregon State in the 2001 Pac-10 tournament semifinals, they received an at-large bid to the 2001 NCAA tournament as a #1 seed in the West region. In the tournament, they beat South Alabama and Oklahoma before losing to Ohio State in the Sweet Sixteen

The Wildcats entered the 2000 NCAA Tournament as a #2 seed in the West Region and advanced to the Elite Eight with wins over Southland Conference champion West Texas State, Princeton, Louisville, and St. John’s before losing to Wisconsin 64-58. Gilbert Arenas was named consensus Second Team All-American and was also named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
