The 2004 USA Basketball Men’s national team was the men’s basketball team that represented the United States of America at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The team was composed of 12 players from the NBA and 10 players from other leagues.

The 2004 United States Men’s Olympic Basketball team represented the United States of America at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Head Coach Larry Brown led the team to a bronze medal finish, their worst result ever in Olympic play.
The team consisted of primarily younger NBA players with fewer established stars than most recent American teams. These players took over from a group of older veterans who had represented the U.S. in international competition for several years and had won gold at both the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2002 FIBA World Championship The team included such future All-Stars as Lebron James Dwyane Wade Carmelo Anthony Dwight Howard and Amar’e Stoudemire. The team lost three exhibition games to Europe-based professional teams; then won all eight games in pool play, before losing to Lithuania 8780 in a final game that saw starting point guard Wade severely cramp up and shooting guard Anthony miss a wide open dunk opportunity late in regulation time which could have put the Americans ahead. They then beat Australia for the bronze medal.
The Roster
In the lead up to the 2004 Olympics, USA Basketball changed their strategy. Rather than using All-Star teams of NBA players they wanted a team of players who worked well together. They also wanted a team that would be successful in the national game which has rules that differ slightly from the NBA. To that end, they chose a roster of collegiate standouts and young NBA players The team was coached by Hall of Famer Larry Brown.

The Coaches
The USA Basketball team for the 2004 Summer Olympics featured some of the most accomplished players in the history of the sport. The team was coached by Larry Brown.
Brown had a long and successful career as a head coach in both the professional ranks and collegiate ranks. He led the Detroit Pistons to an NBA Championship in 2004, and he also coached at the University of Kansas where he won an NCAA championship in 1988.
The assistant coaches on Brown’s staff were Gregg Popovich Nate McMillan, and Lionel Hollins. Popovich is the Head Coach of the San Antonio Spurs, and he has won five NBA championships with that franchise. McMillan is the Head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and Hollins is a former head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies
The Schedule
The USA Basketball Team for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, was announced on April 6, 2004. The team was officially nicknamed the “Redeem Team” because they looked to redeem the United States from their disappointing sixth-place finish in the 2002 FIBA World Championship which was also held in Indianapolis.
Head coach Larry Brown stated that his philosophy was built around defense, i.e., he believed that the success of any team starts with playing good defense With this in mind, he chose a roster of players who were both very talented offensively and could also be depended on to play good defense
The team’s first exhibition game was against Puerto Rico on July 22 at Madison Square Garden They dominated Puerto Rico by a score of 9273. The next two games were much closer; the USA barely squeaked past Italy 9896, and Greece nearly upset them before losing 7771.
The United States then went undefeated in their final five exhibition games. They won handily against Australia 9468 and Angola 8768, but squeaked past Spain 104101 and Lithuania 9490 in nail-biters. Lithuania’s Sarunas Jasikevicius had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but missed his three-point attempt.
After easily winning their first round group with wins over New Zealand (10469), Australia (9576), and Russia (9959), the United States faced Spain again in a rematch of a close game earlier in their exhibition schedule. Spain kept it close throughout most of the game, but once again Jasikevicius missed a critical three-pointer that would have tied the game with seconds remaining; as such, the United States won 10394 to advance to a semifinal matchup with Argentina

The team was commonly referred to as the “Redeem Team”, due to the fact that the Americans had failed to win a medal in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics They won all nine exhibition games en route to the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. The Tournament Format
The format for the Olympic men’s Basketball Tournament has remained the same since 1988. There are 12 teams in the tournament, which is split into two groups of six. The top four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinal round. From there, it is a single-elimination tournament until there is a winner.
