The Chicago Bulls are the best team in the NBA. They have won six championships, and they have been to the playoffs every year since their inception in 1966. Though they haven’t won a championship since Michael Jordan retired in 2003, they still remain one of the most popular teams in America. Their success is largely due to their ability to draft well and build a strong foundation for their players on Offense and defense

The 2005 Illinois Basketball team A Championship Contender
The 2005 Illinois men’s basketball team was a championship contender. The team was led by All-American guard Dee Brown and center James Augustine. The team’s Head Coach was Bruce Weber
The Illini began the season ranked No. 1 in the polls and remained there for the entire season. They won their first 27 games, including a victory over then-ranked No. 2 Duke in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. They lost their 28th game to Ohio State in the regular season finale, but rebounded to win the Big Ten Conference tournament. As a result, they received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament
The Illini were seeded No. 1 in the tournament’s Midwest Region and advanced to the Round of 32 with victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and Nevada. They then lost to Wisconsin in the Round of 32.
The team finished the season with a record of 302 (160 in Big Ten play), as conference champions, and were runners-up in the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region. Despite their success, they were unable to achieve their ultimate goal of winning a National Championship
The 2005 NCAA tournament A Run to Remember
It was a season of firsts for the Illini. A No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. A share of the regular season Big Ten title also a first. They had already set a school record for wins in a season with 29, and they would eventually add four more wins to that total. The 2005 NCAA tournament would ultimately become known as A Run to Remember for Illinois fans, as their beloved Illini made it all the way to the National Championship game before falling short to North Carolina
This team was truly special. They had star power in Deron Williams and Dee Brown, but they also had role players who knew their jobs and did them well. Jimmy Collins did an outstanding job of coaching this team up and getting them to buy into his system. It all came together for Illinois in 2005, and they were just one game away from achieving the ultimate goal of winning a National Championship
Although they came up just short, this Illinois team will always be remembered fondly by Illini fans. They brought excitement and hope back to the program after some lean years, and they will always be A Run to Remember.
The 2005 NIT: A Disappointment, But Still a Success
It was a disappointing end to the season for the Illinois Basketball team After winning the Big Ten outright and being seeded second in the NCAA Tournament they were upset by Duke in the second round. Their only consolation was a berth in the NIT, where they ultimately lost to Texas Tech in the semifinals.
Still, it was a successful season overall for the Illini. They finished with a 27-7 record, their best since 1989-90. They also won their first conference title since 2001-02 and made their seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament
In addition to their on-court success, the Illini also excelled in the classroom. They had a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the fourth straight semester and had four Academic All-Big Ten selections.
The 2005 team will go down as one of the most successful in Illinois history, even though they didn’t quite reach their ultimate goal of winning a National Championship
The 2005-2006 Season: A Look Ahead
It is safe to say that the Illinois basketball team has been a disappointment so far this season. They have yet to find their footing and have looked lost on the court at times. However, there is still a lot of basketball to be played and this team has the potential to turn things around. With that being said, let’s take a look at what the rest of the season has in store for the Illini.
As of right now, the Illini are 12-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play They are currently sitting in 11th place in the Conference Standings and are in danger of missing the NCAA tournament However, there is still time for this team to turn things around. They have some winnable games remaining on their schedule and if they can string together a few wins, they will be right back in contention for an NCAA Tournament berth.
The 2005-2006 season has not been kind to the Illini so far, but there is still time for them to turn things around. With a little bit of luck and some hard work this team could find themselves back in the thick of things before it is all said and done.
The Return of Dee Brown and Deron Williams
After a disappointing 2004 campaign in which the Illini failed to make the NCAA Tournament head coach Bruce Weber led the team to a 25-5 (12-4 Big Ten) record in the 2005 season. The season was highlighted by the return of Dee Brown and Deron Williams, who had both left early for the NBA after the 2003-2004 season. With Brown and Williams back, Illinois climbed to as high as No. 2 in the AP Poll and won both the conference Regular Season and conference tournament championships. The Illini’s season came to an end when they lost to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tournament

The 2006 NCAA Tournament A New Opportunity
In the 2006 NCAA tournament the Illinois basketball team had a new opportunity to redeem themselves after a disappointing 2005 season. The tournament started off great for the Illini, who won their first two games by double digits. However, their run came to an end in the Sweet Sixteen when they lost to eventual National Champion Florida. Although it was a disappointing end to the season, the 2006 tournament was a marked improvement from 2005 for Illinois.
The 2006-2007 Season: A New Challenge
The Illinois men’s Basketball team began their 2006-2007 season with a new challenge. They were not only trying to improve on their disappointing 2005-2006 season, but they were also trying to regain the National Championship that they had won in 2005. The team started off the season ranked #5 in the nation, but they quickly fell out of the top spot after losing to unranked Bradley in their second game of the season. They bounced back from this early season loss and went on to win their next 18 games, including a victory over then-#1 Ohio State This put them back atop the rankings, where they remained for the rest of the regular season
The team entered the NCAA tournament as a #1 seed in their region, and they made it to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to eventual national champion Florida. Their final record for the season was 31-5, and they finished #8 in the final AP poll.
