Introducing the LSU women’s basketball team

The LSU women’s Basketball team is one of the strongest and most successful teams in the country. They have a rich history of success, dating back to their establishment in 1974. Since then, they have won numerous conference championships and made it to the NCAA tournament 17 times. In 2019, they made it all the way to the Final Four, where they lost to eventual champion Baylor.

The team is led by Head Coach Nikki Fargas who has been at the helm since 2008. Under her guidance, the team has won two SEC regular season titles and one SEC tournament title. Prior to her arrival, the team had only won one conference championship in their history. In addition to her on-court success, Coach Fargas is also widely respected for her leadership and ability to develop young players

The 2019-2020 Season was a trying one for the team, as they dealt with injuries to several Key Players Despite this, they still managed to finish with a 26-7 record and win another SEC regular season title. They ultimately lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Indiana, but there is no doubt that this is a team on the rise.

Looking ahead to next season, the LSU women’s basketball team will once again be one of the favorites to win both the SEC and make a deep run in March Madness Be sure to keep an eye on this talented group of young women as they continue their quest for greatness.

The road to the Final Four

In 2018, the LSU Tigers women’s Basketball team made their first trip to the Final Four in program history. The journey to get there was a long one, starting with a 26-6 Regular Season record. They then had to win three more games in the SEC Tournament before finally reaching the Big Dance.

In the NCAA tournament they would have to win four more games to make it to Columbus, Ohio. They started off strong with a win against North Carolina State in the Round of 64. They then took down Central Michigan in the Round of 32 behind 21 points from Experienced Sophomore Ayanna Mitchell. Next up was a matchup against top-seeded Baylor in the Sweet Sixteen

The Tigers proved they belonged with the best in the country, taking down Baylor 78-69. They advanced to the Elite Eight where they would face off against another Blue Blood program in Notre Dame The game went down to the wire, but LSU came out on top 79-76 to advance to their first ever Final Four.

In the National Semifinal, LSU would take on another Cinderella story in 11th seeded Missouri State The game was close throughout, butLSU would ultimately prevail 66-64 thanks to a late layup from Ayanna Mitchell. That set up a matchup with perennial powerhouse UConn in the National Championship game.

The game was back and forth throughout, but UConn would ultimately come out on top 58-54. While it wasn’t the result LSU was hoping for, making it to the National Championship game was an unbelievable accomplishment for a program that had never been there before.

Now, they’re just two games away from claiming the National Championship

For head coach Nikki Fargas and her team, it’s been a journey of hard work and determination. “I’m so proud of this team,” Fargas said after the team’s win in the Elite Eight. “They’ve worked so hard all season long and they’re just playing their best basketball at the right time.”

The next season
After an incredible run to the Sweet Sixteen in Caldwell’s first year at the helm, expectations were high for the LSU Women’s basketball team heading into the 2014-2015 season. The Tigers got off to a hot start, winning their first eight games of the season. But then things took a turn for the worse.

First, star guard Danielle Ballard suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in December. Then, in January, starting center Shanece McKinney went down with a Knee Injury that would sideline her for the rest of the season. With two of their best players out of commission, many thought that LSU’s chances of making a deep run in the NCAA tournament were slim.

But Caldwell and her team proved everyone wrong. Led by senior forward Theresa Plaisance and junior guard Raigyne Louis, LSU won 14 of their final 18 games en route to a second consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearance. They ultimately fell just short of the Elite Eight, losing to eventual national runner-up Notre Dame by four points in overtime.

It was an impressive showing by Caldwell and her squad, one that cemented their place among the nation’s elite programs. And with Plaisance and Louis returning for their senior seasons, along with McKinney and Ballard back healthy and ready to contribute, there was no reason to believe that LSU couldn’t make a run at the Final Four in 2015-2016.
