WKU’s recruiting process

The Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers men’s basketball team is a Division I college basketball program that competes in Conference USA The team’s home court is E. A. Diddle Arena, located on WKU’s campus in Bowling Green Kentucky.

WKU has recruiting classes ranked in the Top 25 by multiple publications. In recent years WKU has landed players such as Mitchell Robinson, who was considered a five-star recruit by some publications.

If you are a High School player considering WKU as a possible destination for your collegiate career, here is what you can expect from the recruiting process

-You will be contacted by the Coaching Staff via telephone or text message.
-You will be asked to come on an official visit to campus, where you will have the opportunity to meet with the Coaching Staff tour the facilities, and see a game.
-You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your academic and athletic abilities.
-You may be asked to submit a highlight reel or game film for evaluation purposes.
-You may be asked to participate in an on-campus workout or interview with the coaching staff

WKU Head Coach Rick Stansbury and his staff are looking for players that are versatile, can shoot the three-ball, and most importantly, players with a High Basketball IQ.

WKU has had success in recent years by recruiting players like Justin Johnson (a 6’7” forward who could stretch the floor), Taveion Hollingsworth (a 6’2” guard who could play both on and off the ball), and Josh Anderson (a 6’5” guard who was a lockdown defender). All three of these players were key pieces to WKU’s 2017 Conference USA Championship team and played vital roles in helping WKU get to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

WKU’s recruiting budget

According to head coach Rick Stansbury, WKU’s recruiting budget for the 2019-2020 season is $275,000. This budget covers travel expenses for the coaching staff and prospective student-athletes, as well as evaluation tools like scouting services.

The Hilltoppers are looking to add at least one impact player in the 2019 recruiting class with the hope that they can compete for an NCAA tournament berth next season. They currently have two committed players in four-star small forward Josh Nichol and three-star Power Forward Austin Harper.

The number of scholarships WKU can offer

In recent years, WKU has been able to offer more scholarships than in years past. In 2019, WKU will have 14 scholarships to offer. That number includes one non-renewable, four-year scholarship and 13 renewals (provided the player meets the NCAA’s academic standards).

WKU’s recruiting calendar

May 1st is the first day college basketball coaches can contact recruits in writing. Although phone calls are permissible starting September 1st, most of the recruiting process for College Basketball takes place during the “contact period.” The contact period is declared by the NCAA and typically runs from mid-April to late May, and then again from late June to early August. College basketball’s regular Signing Period begins on the first Wednesday of November and lasts until the following Wednesday.

WKU’s Basketball Recruiting staff is looking to add a few more pieces to the puzzle as they continue to build towards the future. Head Coach Rick Stansbury and his staff will be hitting the recruiting trail hard this month in hopes of adding a few more players to their 2019 class.

The Hilltoppers currently have four commitments in their 2019 class, but they are still looking to add a few more players. WKU is expected to sign a total of six or seven players in the 2019 class.

The Hilltoppers will be looking to add a few more big men to their 2019 class as they only have one committed at this time. WKU is also expected to sign at least one guard in the 2019 class.
