Meet Ball State’s New Basketball Coach

Ball State University’s new basketball coach is a familiar face to many in the Muncie community. Coach James Whitford spent the last six seasons as an Assistant Coach at the University of Arizona and he is excited to return to his roots and take over the Cardinals program.

Coach Whitford is a proven winner, and he is committed to helping Ball State student-athletes excel on the court and in the classroom. We are excited to welcome him back to Ball State and look

Who is the new coach?

Ball State University’s new men’s basketball coach is James Whitford. He comes to Ball State from the University of Arizona where he served as an assistant coach for eight seasons. Prior to that, he was Head Coach at Xavier University for six seasons.

Whitford is a native of Indianapolis and played his college basketball at the University of San Diego He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from USD in 1994 and his master’s degree in education from Xavier in 2001.

Why was he hired?

Wood was hired because of his proven track record as a successful Head Coach He has a wealth of experience and has demonstrated the ability to build a winning program.

We are very excited to have Coach Wood leading our program and we are confident that he will be able to take our team to new heights.

He likes his teams to play an aggressive, physical brand of defense.

He is not afraid to give his players freedom on the offensive end of the floor, but they have to be willing to work hard on the defensive end first and foremost.

He is known for being demanding, but also fair. His players know that he will hold them accountable and push them to be their best both on and off the court.

The first test for Coach Whitford and his team will come on November 8th when they open their season against Indiana State

What are the expectations for his first season?

In his first season as head coach Mike Neu will look to lead the Ball State Cardinals to their first NCAA tournament appearance in over 20 years. The Cardinals have not made the NCAA Tournament since 1995, when they lost in the Round of 64 to Kentucky.

Neu, who was hired in April of 2016, comes to Ball State after spending the previous season as the head coach at Florida Atlantic University He led the Owls to a 14-18 record in his only season at the helm.

Prior to coaching at FAU, Neu spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Tulane University He also has experience coaching in the NBA D-League where he was an assistant coach for the Iowa Energy from 2007 to 2009.

As a player, Neu spent five seasons in the Arena Football League with the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Storm. He was a two-time All-Arena selection and won a League Championship with Tampa Bay in 1995.

How did he become a coach?

Growing up, Coach Smith loved playing basketball He never imagined that one day he would become a coach, but that’s exactly what happened. After college, he worked as a teacher and then as an assistant coach at a nearby High School When the head coaching position at Ball State opened up, he applied and got the job.
