The most controversial moments in CHSSA Basketball
Interscholastic Basketball in California is some of the most competitive and highly followed in the nation. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) is made up of ten sections, with each section having its own playoff system to determine a section champion. From there, the champions of each section advance to the state championship tournament, where they compete for the title of California State Champion.
The Southern Section (comprised of schools in Southern California) is widely considered to be the most competitive and deepest in terms of talent. Consequently, the Cif Southern Section championship is one of the most coveted titles in high school basketball. Over the years, there have been many great teams and players that have come out of the Southern Section, and as a result, there have also been many great moments and games.
However, not all moments in Cif Southern Section history are positive or controversy-free. In fact, there have been several moments that have caused quite a stir, both at the time and in retrospect. Here are four of the most controversial moments in CIF Southern Section Basketball History
1) The “shot clock Violation” game: In 2006, Hart high school was playing Alemany high school in a final game of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. With seconds remaining in overtime and Alemany leading by two points, Hart’s Jordan Wilkes attempted a desperation Three-Point Shot that was partially blocked by an Alemany defender. The ball appeared to hit the rim before time expired, but the officials ruled that it was a shot clock violation and Alemany won the game. The decision was controversial at the time and it still is today, as many people believe that Hart should have been given another chance to win the game.
2) The “Illegal Substitution” game: In 2007, Mater Dei High School was playing Taft high school in a semifinal game of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. With Mater Dei leading by two points with seconds remaining, Taft’s Ami Lawrence was fouled while attempting a three-point shot However, before Lawrence could shoot her Free throws she was informed by one of her coaches that she had six fouls (which would result in her fouling out of the game). As a result, Lawrence refused to shoot her Free throws and Taft was forced to substitute her for another player. The officials ruled that this was an illegal substitution and awarded Mater Dei three free throws (which they made), resulting in Mater Dei winning the game by one point. This ruling was controversial because many people believed thatTavern should have been given another chance to shoot her free throws with Lawrence still onthe court (since she technically had not fouled out yet).
3) The “Ineligible Player” game: In 2012, St. John Bosco High School was playing Dominguez High School forthe CIF Southern Section Division I championship. Dominguez wonthe game handily by a scoreof 72-54 but itwas later revealedthat they had used an ineligible player duringthe seasonand as a result were forcedto forfeitthe championshipto St. John Bosco(who then became co-championswith Mater Dei since they had lostto Dominguezinthe semifinals). This decisiwasextremely controversialbecauseit not only deprivedDominguezof their first ever championshipbutit also meantthatSt..JohnBoscowouldhavetwo co-champions insteadof just one(whichis very rarein High School sports).
4) The “Disqualified Team” game: In 2014Foothill TechnologyHigh Schoolwasplaying ChaminadeHigh Schoolfora spotin thesemifinalsof therCitySectionplayoffs(whichwouldhavebeen Foothill’sfirst ever appearancein thesemifinals). Foothill wonthe gamewitha last secondthree-pointshot but itwas later revealedthat theyhad used an ineligibleplayer duringtheseasonand asa resultwereforcedto forfeittheirspotinthe semifinals(and Chaminadewasgiven theirplace instead). This decisionwas very costlyfor Foothillbecause not only didthey lose theirchanceat making historyby qualifyingfor thesemifinalsfor thte first timeeverbutthey alsohadtowatchasChaminademadea deep runinto them postseasonall becausethey weredisqualifiedfrom playoffscontentionentirely..This momentwasextremelycontroversialand still istoday becausemany peoplebelievethat Foothillshouldhavebeengivenanotherchanceat makingThesemomentsarejust someofthe Basketball History .What doyou think?
