The conference was founded in 1985 as the Big East Conference of Baseball, with seven charter members: Connecticut, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Providence, Seton Hall St. John’s, and Syracuse. Villanova and West Virginia joined the following year, and Boston College and Rutgers joined in 1988. Miami (FL) and Virginia Tech joined in 1991, followed by Notre Dame in 1996. The conference expanded to 12 teams in 1999 with the addition of Louisville; this remained its membership through 2013.
In 2014, the Big East split into two conferences; the 10 schools located north of Maryland became associate members of the new Big Ten Conference’s baseball league (as none of them were members of that institution), while Georgetown rejoined its former all-sports home Conference USA (where it was a charter member before defecting to the Big East for basketball-only beginning with the 1979–80 season). The eight schools located south of Maryland then became full members of the reconfigured Big East Conference. The full membership comprises those eight schools along with four other Catholic universities: Butler (which had been a basketball-only member since 2012), Creighton (joined 2013), DePaul (1995), and Marquette (2005). Xavier left after 2017 to join the Atlantic 10 Conference; as part thereof, it brought that league up to an even 10 baseball-sponsoring members.
