The Gopher Baseball roster is out, and there are some surprises. Who’s in and who’s out?
First, the good news: Pitcher Jake Odorizzi is back! He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft but he opted to return to school for his senior year. He’ll be the Gophers’ ace this season.
Outfielder Troy Bourget is also back. He missed last season with an injury, but he’s healthy and ready to go this year.
Now, the bad news: Shortstop Michael Brothers is out for the season with an injury. Additionally, pitcher Kurt Heyer and infielder Alex Mejia have both been suspended for violating team rules. They will miss the first half of the season.

Pitcher Ryan Zander is a junior transfer from Iowa Western Community College He’s been impressive in pre-season scrimmages, showcasing a 90 mph fastball and a sharp slider.
Infielder Connor Johnson is a highly-touted freshman from Eden Prairie Minnesota. He’s expected to be an immediate contributor on both Offense and defense
Catcher Jake Burger is a senior leader who knows how to handle a pitching staff. He’s also an excellent hitter, batting cleanup in the lineup.
Outfielder Jacki Wansley is a junior who provides speed and good defense in center field. She’s also an excellent base-runner, stealing 50 bases in her career so far.

There are 12 players on the roster, including outfielders, infielders, and pitchers. The Gophers will carry six pitchers, all of whom are right-handed. The team’s closer is senior right-hander Bret Johnson.
The infield is anchored by first baseman Connor Casperson and shortstop Levi Gilbertson. Casperson was an All-Big Ten honorable mention last year, while Gilbertson is a former top-100 High School prospect who has battled injuries during his time at Minnesota.
