The Designated Hitters
The designated hitter or DH, is a player who bats in the place of the pitcher. The position is currently used in the American League of Major League Baseball and the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan.
The designated hitter differs from other hitters because he does not play in the field. A DH can be put into the game as a substitute for any position player, but not as a pitcher or a catcher.
Designated hitters are often used to keep the pitchers’ arms fresh and to add another bat to the lineup. In most cases, the DH is used as a way to increase offense. In some cases, however, teams will use the DH to rest a star player or to give a struggling player more time to work on his hitting.
The use of designated hitters has been controversial since it was introduced in 1973. Some fans believe that it takes away from the strategy of the game and makes it less interesting to watch. Others believe that it adds excitement to the game and gives fans another reason to come out to the ballpark.
Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that designated hitters have had an impact on baseball. Here are just a few of the most notable players who have served as designated hitters over the years.
