The Early Years

Seton Hall Baseball has a long and storied tradition of excellence. The program has roots dating back to 1878, when a team was first fielded by Seton Hall College (now University). The early years of the program were marked by great success, with the team winning several championships in the 1880s.

In the early 1900s, Seton Hall Baseball experienced a period of decline. The program was resurrected in the 1920s by legendary coach James “Jimmy” Shevlin. Under Shevlin’s leadership, Seton Hall became a power in Collegiate Baseball winning multiple conference championships.

The 1930s and 1940s were years of transition for Seton Hall Baseball. The team moved to a new conference, the Middle States Conference, and began playing its home games at new facilities off-campus. Despite these changes, Seton Hall continued to be one of the top teams in Collegiate Baseball winning multiple conference championships.

The 1950s were a decade of great success for Seton Hall Baseball. Led by legendary Coach Mike Topham, the team won five Middle States Conference championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. The 1950s also saw the construction of brand new on-campus baseball facilities – Marinelli Field – which remains the home of Seton Hall Baseball to this day.

The Golden Age

Baseball has been a part of Seton Hall University since 1881, just four years after the school was founded. Though the sport has gone through many changes over the years, Seton Hall’s commitment to excellence has remained constant. The Golden Age of Seton Hall baseball began in 1947 with the hiring of Mike Gonnella as Head Coach Gonnella led the Pirates to their first ever victory over a ranked team in 1948, a 5-4 win over No. 13 Georgetown. The following season, Seton Hall won a school record 21 games and Gonnella was named “Coach of the Year” by Baseball America

During Gonnella’s tenure, 12 Seton Hall Players went on to play Major League Baseball including Mickey Vernon, who played 20 seasons with the Washington Senators Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates Under Gonnella’s leadership, Seton Hall won two Big East Championships and made five appearances in the NCAA tournament In 2000, Gonnella was inducted into the Seton Hall Athletic Hall of Fame

Gonnella retired in 1966 and was succeeded by longtime Assistant Coach Frank Hill. Hill continuedSeton Hall’s tradition of excellence, leading the Pirates to five NCAA tournament appearances in his six seasons as head coach In 1971, Seton Hall won its first ever NCAA regional Championship and advanced to the College World Series for the first time in school history. The following year, the Pirates made their second consecutive trip to Omaha and finished as runner-up in the College World Series

Hill retired in 1972 and was succeeded by his assistant coach Pete Caldera Sr., who would go on to have a successful career as a Major League scout with the New York Yankees Caldera led Seton Hall to four more NCAA tournament appearances before retiring in 1986.

The Modern Era

The modern ERA of Seton Hall baseball began in 1992, when Head Coach Mike Sheppard took over the program. Sheppard quickly turned things around, leading the team to its first conference championship in 1994. The team made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 1995 and 1996, and won another Conference Championship in 1997.

Under Sheppard’s leadership, the team became known for its strong pitching staffs and tough defense. In 2000, Seton Hall won its first ever Big East regular season championship, en route to anotherAppearance In The NCAA tournament The team also made an appearance in the 2001 College World Series one of the most prestigious events in college baseball

Since 2001, Seton Hall has continued to be one of the top teams In The Big East Conference The team has won multiple conference championships and made several appearances in The NCAA Tournament Seton Hall has also produced some of The Top Players In college baseball including All-Americans Randyacebook Johnson and Jeff D’Amico./Kotchman

The Seton Hall Baseball Legacy

Clemson game on March 3, 1911, Seton Hall University’s official colors of blue and white were adopted. The school’s teams were then called the “Blue and Whites.” In 1927, the students voted to change the name of the teams to “Pirates,” and Seton Hall has beenknown as the Pirates ever since. The name was chosen in honor of the notorious pirate, Captain Kidd, who is said to have buried some of his treasure on Gardiners Island, not far from Seton Hall’s campus.

Seton Hall competes in NCAA Division I and is a founding member of the Big East Conference The Seton Hall Baseball Team has appeared in 19 NCAA Tournaments and has won 11 conference championships. Additionally, 27 alumni have reached the Major Leagues
